Poundland to roll out frozen and chilled food to 60 shops – and it's launching a delivery service next year

POUNDLAND is rolling out frozen and chilled food to 60 shops – and it's going to trial a delivery service next year.

The discounter began testing selling frozen food in seven stores in October 2019 and now it hopes to introduce the range on a more wider scale.

Shoppers will be able to pick up pizza, chips and ready meals as well as cheap household goods when they go to Poundland.

The budget retailer has partnered with frozen food specialist Fulton Foods for the new grub, which includes over 400 everyday items from frozen fish to yogurts.

The range will be priced between £50 and £5, depending on the product.

By the end of July, fridges and freezers for the food will be installed at 12 more branches, bringing the total number of stores to sell the range to 30.

Next week, shops in Great Bridge Retail Park, Erdington, Sutton Coldfield and Wednesbury will begin to offer the range.

The final stores to start selling freezer food this month will be in Willenhall, Hanley, Walsall and Mere Green.

The bargain retailer is also planning on trialling an online shopping and delivery service at the start of next year.

It's closing down one of its three stores in Cannock this Saturday to turn it into an "online fulfilment centre".

Essentially, it will be a hub where the online orders are processed and shipped out for delivery to homes nearby.

The move is part of a package of measures – dubbed "Project Diamond" – to help the retailer thrive in the wake of the pandemic.

It will also make wi-fi available in every store, open new shops such as three new ones under the Dealz brand in the Republic of Irelend, and install its clothing brand, Pep&CO, in more stores.

Barry Williams, managing director at the retailer said: "We’re stepping up to support high streets after the impact of the coronavirus by being customer-focused, people-led and tech-enabled.

"This is the biggest transformation in our history as we look to secure our future for another thirty years."

Since June 15, thousands of retailers have opened their doors once again as lockdown measures on the high street have been eased.

But there are warnings that 250,000 high street jobs could be axed as footfall remains far below pre-lockdown levels.

From next Friday, wearing face masks in shops will be made compulsory – here's where you can buy a reusable one.
