Christine and Paddy marriage struggles

Christine opened up to OK! Magazine about their marriage went through a rocky patch, hitting back at the split rumours.

The mum of three insisted there were bound to be problems in all relationships, especially after Paddy had been spotted with Nicole.

She told OK! exclusively back in 2018: "A marriage isn't a static thing – people change all the time – so it's inevitable that relationships are going to go through ups and downs.

"As a family we've had an awful lot to deal with, but you can only do your best in a relationship and like anything else it takes working at, and we're working things through. We've been through a hell of a lot worse."

Christine’s reaction to Paddy split rumours

Christine said the couple have endured a lot of “ups and downs” throughout their seven year marriage. But the split rumours were no “no big deal” for the pair.

Speaking to OK! magazine at the time Christine said: “For everyone else it was this huge drama, but for us it wasn’t a big deal. We’ve always been extremely private; we’ve been together 11 years and there have been ups and downs. I was 19 when we met. These headlines were easy for me to go: ‘It’s not even worth focusing on.’”

However, Christine did have moments were she would break down and cry. She explained: “Some days I’d cry, but you have to get on with things. The recent headlines made us open our eyes. It made us realise we have to make some changes.”

Paddy and Nicole Appleton rumours

Paddy McGuinness was seen walking arm in arm with former All Saints star Nicole Appleton in Soho in February 2018, sparking a string of cryptic messages from his wife Christine McGuinness.

It is believed while Paddy was enjoying a night out with Nicole, his wife was at home looking after their three children.

Christine took to social media to share a personal quote with her 34.2k followers, saying "everything happens for a reason" after the photos emerged.

In tweets uncovered by The Sun, Nicole and Paddy publicly chatted on Twitter back in November when the Take Me Out presenter shared a witty message about celebrating All Saints' Day.

Christine and Paddy make major relationship changes

Since the split rumours emerged Paddy and his wife have made more effort to spend quality time together as a family.

She told OK! Magazine: “We’re putting effort in and making more time for each other – we haven’t done that since having children.”

The couple now ensure they have regular dates together, and share parental duties.

Christine said: “We’re spending a lot more time together. He’s having more time with the children and I’m spending some more time on my own, which is something I’ve never done before. We know we want to be together forever – not just for our children, but for us too."

When did Christine and Paddy get together?

Paddy first met Christine back in 2007 when she was 19 when she was modelling for Liverpool-based boutique Cricket in just her bikini.

The loved-up couple went on to get married in 2011 and enjoyed celebrating their ninth anniversary while still in lockdown during the coronavirus pandemic.

The TV host sheepishly wrote alongside a snap of them inside their home: "13 years together, 9 years of marriage, 3 children and hardly any hair left.

Christine was equally as gushing about her comedian husband, sharing a montage of pictures from their anniversary celebration.

"Happy anniversary 13 years together, 9 years married!!! Even though you totally forgot.. again! You are forgiven because I couldn’t do life without laughter and you give me so much! Happy anniversary my love @mcguinness.paddy"

How many children do Christine and Paddy have?

After tying the knot, the couple didn't wait long before expanding the family.

In January 2013, the couple announced they were expecting not one but two new arrivals, welcoming twins Penelope Patricia and son, Leo Joseph, one year later.

In September 2016, they welcomed another baby girl, Felicity Rose.

Speaking to OK! Magazine, Christine said: “We had three children in three years so all our focus was on them. Patrick was busy so we took on our separate roles. That happens in a marriage, but now the children are at school and nursery we’ve started doing afternoon dates.”

Christine and Paddy parenting challenges

The couple's twins and daughter all have autism and Christine is an advocate for raising awareness, she regularly shares updates with her followers on Instagram.

Speaking exclusively to OK! magazine earlier this year Christine spoke about the reality of raising children while juggling a busy career and her marriage while Paddy is away filming Top Gear.

Christine explained: “There’s no time for us as a couple. But we have to stay strong for our kids.”

The mother-of-three, who has been married to the presenter for 13 years, also explained Paddy’s recent struggles after he said in 2017 that he “never feels happy” in himself.

“It was heartbreaking. I know he didn’t mean he wasn’t happy with me or the children, just that it’s difficult to switch off when we’re at home. There’s no time for us as a couple,” she explained.

“No quality time, no date nights. Not even time to have a laugh together. We’re full-time carers and the kids come before everything. But we have to stay strong as a unit for our kids.”
