My husband is so tight with money, he disconnected the boiler and now it’s cold – The Sun

DEAR DEIDRE: WHEN my husband spends money it’s as if it hurts him. He is the tightest man ever.

We’re both 41 and have three children. He has a good business but expects me to pay for all the kids’ teas, packed lunches, school trips, and uniform – everything – out of the child benefit.

He went away fishing last weekend but he was furious the heating was on “too high” when he returned, so he disconnected the boiler and now it’s cold.

My son left the bathroom light on and went to school so my husband took the bulb out of his bedroom. Now he spends no time in his room.

I walk on eggshells all the time. Does the way he behaves count as abuse?

DEIDRE SAYS: He’s a bully and living like this is damaging for your children as well as soul-destroying for you. Tell him that your marriage can’t survive like this and together you need to work out a fairer way to share out the family finances. I can send you a guide to help do the sums.

If he won’t or you’re too scared to suggest that, talk to the National Domestic Abuse Helpline, (0808 2000 247) or see survivingeconomicabuse.org.
