A dress designed for the mother of the bride or groom at a wedding has sparked controversy online in a hilarious Twitter thread.

The dress, a black beaded number, first came to people’s attention when Twitter user Rave Sashayed posted a screen shot of the dress that retails on Etsy, saying: ‘The pure awe i experienced when i saw this was labeled a “mother of the bride” dress.’

Since the tweet was posted, it has garnered almost 6,000 likes and just under 200 comments, as many people have revealed their shock at the fact the dress was designed to be worn to a wedding.

Wow: Twitter users have been sharing their opinions about a dress (pictured) that was designed to be worn by mothers of the bride or groom at a wedding

Details: The dress is available on Etsy – where it is described as a ‘black mother of the bride dress’ – from a Bulgaria-based retailer, and costs $2,390

Viral: Twitter user Rave Sashayed posted photos of the dress and another gown from the same brand, saying that she was shocked to see they were made for a ‘mother of the bride’

The dress, which was posted by Bulgaria-based designer Tonena, retails on handmade and vintage website Etsy for $2,390.

It is described as a ‘black mother of the bride dress, open back evening gown with long sleeves, sexy formal dress with feathers, sexy black dress.’

Chic! Despite many agreeing that the two dresses look gorgeous, people on Twitter deemed them completely inappropriate for a mother of the bride to wear to a wedding

The floor-length gown features black beading throughout the entire length of the dress, as well as hand-sewn black ostrich feathers.

Its description continues: ‘This charming sexy black gown has body colored lining that could be made longer if requested.

‘The sleeves are adjustable and could be moved. It looks amazing as it has a push-up effect.’

And despite the dress’s gorgeous qualities, an eagle-eyed Twitter user who spotted the posting on the website couldn’t help but wonder why it was listed as a ‘mother of the bride’ style dress.

User @_sashayed took to the social media platform on Monday, March 11, when she posted a photo of the dress as it appeared on the site.

Alongside the photo, she wrote a series of tweets that read: ‘The pure awe i experienced when i saw this was labeled a “mother of the bride” dress.

‘”DARling, did you forGET to inVITE your MOTHER????” – me in this extremely normal mother-of-the-bride dress, slamming into my daughter’s wedding mid-Mendelssohn while a lightning storm rages outside. The guests gasp in terror.’

‘Listen. The person making these couture dresses for wicked stepmothers has a third eye and it is WIDE f***ing open,’ she added, beside a photo of another ‘mother of the bride’ dress posted by the Etsy account.

Not impressed: Many people commented on the tweet, saying that they too couldn’t believe the dress was advertised as a ‘mother of the bride’ gown

Since Rave’s tweet was posted, it has garnered just under 6,000 likes and almost 200 comments.

Fellow users on the social media platform couldn’t believe the dress was somewhat made to be worn by mothers of the bride and groom.

One Twitter user, @chatter_radio wrote: ‘That dress says I’m seducing my son in law and when my daughter confronts me i will chuckle scornfully.’

Another user, @callmecarm said: ‘I feel like there’s a minimum villainy requirement to wear one of these dresses.’

A third Twitter user who spotted the tweet added that after working in the wedding industry, she thinks there are many mothers who would wear the dress to their child’s wedding.

‘Just saying, I used to work with in the wedding industry and there are definitely motb/motg out there who would wear this,’ user @arerutledge said.

Several others compared the dress to something similar to what would have been worn by characters in 1991 comedy The Addams Family.

Yikes! Some users confused the dress for lingerie, with one saying it is a dress that shouldn’t be worn to public appearances

User @pludulutch said: ‘While it’s true everyone has their own taste, this looks like something only a lady of ill repute would wear or possibly or Morticia Addams in the privacy of her own bedroom.’

‘This mother of the bride married Uncle Fester for the inheritance,’ added @EveForster.

Another user, @qbloodsong said of the dress: ‘Well. That is a thing. Morticia would be so proud.’

Meanwhile, another user confused the black floor-length number for lingerie.

Twitter user @MisophonicSpree said: ‘Of course! Even mothers of the bride want to have nice lingerie. Wait, what? You are telling me that’s a dress and not a negligee?’

Similarly, another said the dress was not suitable for public wear.

The user, @souzou_no, said: ‘This is boudoir! Definitely not a dress for public appearances. Right? Or am I prudish in my old age?’

Imagination: Several users joked about the different celebrities – including Melania Trump, Kim Kardashian and Kris Jenner – they thought would wear such a dress to a wedding

Others joked about different celebrity’s who they thought the dress would be well suited to.

Twitter user @ML_Rudolph said the dress could ‘only’ be worn by 72-year-old singer Cher, and ‘no one else’.

User @reneewrought said the dress was more suited to Kris Jenner, 63, when they wrote: ‘Are you saying this ISN’T what Kris Jenner wore to (one of) Kim’s wedding(s)? Because if you are I don’t believe you.’

‘I mean, yeah, I guess? If you’re Kim Kardashian and North is getting married,’ another user @sherean wrote about the dress.

A different user, @claris101, wrote: ‘Dang, I can hardly wait to see Melania wear this when Barron married someday.’
