Melbourne International Comedy Festival: Punchlines between the ears

The key appeal of Silent Comedy is the chance to be in on the joke while clueless commuters at nearby Flinders Street watch on in confusion.

The event wedges an audience between platform 13 and the Yarra to hear a rotating roster of comics deliver largely adults-only material through headphones. (The performers are on a stage but can't otherwise be heard over the bustle of the station and the restaurant's house music.)

Opening night saw Bev Killick, Carey Marx, Dolly Diamond and Jimeoin amping up the shock value, delivering the racier parts of their own individual shows to an audience keen to start the weekend early.

There's also opportunity for the comics to engage with innocent folk passing by the stage site, who are not able to hear the broadcast. Not all of the attempts on this night worked, but the crowd was keen to keen to soak it up anyway.
