Karl Lagerfeld dead: Diane Kruger, Claudia Schiffer and more honor Chanel designer

The fashion industry is mourning the loss of legendary Chanel designer Karl Lagerfeld, whose death was announced on Tuesday morning. The style icon was 85 years old.

Over the course of his decades-long career, Lagerfeld dressed countless celebrities and supermodels in his creations, many of whom took to social media to express their sympathy.

“Karl was my magic dust, he transformed me from a shy German girl into a supermodel,” wrote Claudia Schiffer on Instagram. “He taught me about fashion, style and survival in the fashion business. What Warhol was to art, he was to fashion; he is irreplaceable. He is the only person who could make black and white colourful! I will be eternally grateful to him.”

Schiffer’s fellow catwalk legend Linda Evangelista shared an image of herself and Lagerfeld mid-photoshoot, calling the designer the “great love of [her] life,” while Naomi Campbell thanked him “for taking the chance on [a] 16 year old girl from South London and opening my eyes.”

Wrote Kim Kardashian of the iconic designer: “We lost a true legend!!!! You were such an inspiration to the world! You shot my first fashion shoot and I was so nervous to work with such an icon! The world is so much chicer because you existed! I am beyond honored to have met you and had the opportunity to work with you. You are so loved and will be so missed.”

Lagerfeld’s longtime muse Diane Kruger, who began her career as a model and had been close with the designer since the ’90s, said she was “heartbroken” over not being able to say a proper goodbye. “Karl…..I cannot tell you how much you meant to me and how much I will miss you,” she wrote on Instagram. “I will never forget your kindness towards me, your laughs, your imagination ♥️ I came to France to see you this week and introduce you to my daughter…I’m heartbroken I was too late ♥️ Rest In Peace, I adore you ♥️”

Added model and Chanel favorite Kaia Gerber: “This one hurts to write. My dearest Karl, you have taught me things that I am eternally grateful for. I cannot put into words how lucky we all are to have been gifted your vision. Your girls love you so much. The world is more beautiful now because of you. Thank you for everything, no one will ever compare.”

Both Gigi and Bella Hadid also posted tributes to the late Lagerfeld. “Nothing feels right today..at a loss for words and so heartbroken by the loss of Karl,” Bella wrote. “His humor, wit, love and passion for fashion will live on forever. Thank you for the inspiration that you gave to this world and for all of the hearts that you touched in the process. Every time I saw you it felt like the first time & I will miss your hugs so much. I feel so lucky to have been in your presence. Sending my love to the Lagerfeld family and to all closest to him. I am so sorry. We all love you so much .? Rest In Peace KL❤️”

On her Instagram Stories, Gigi chimed in: “I’m so heartbroken I almost don’t have words … There will never be another Karl Lagerfeld. Every second with you was an honor, joy and inspiration. I wish I could give you one last hug. I love you Karl. Thank you for everything.”

And several of Lagerfeld’s designer peers honored the prolific couturier on their accounts as well. “Karl your genius touched the lives of so many, especially Gianni and I,” Donatella Versace wrote. “We will never forget your incredible talent and endless inspiration. We were always learning from you.”

Added Victoria Beckham: “So incredibly sad to hear this. Karl was a genius and always so kind and generous to me both personally and professionally. RIP ?x vb”
