The series was inspired by a real-life event

Many fans may not realize it, but 9-1-1 was inspired by an actual event that happened to producer Ryan Murphy. When Murphy’s son was just 11 months old, he stopped breathing in the middle of the night. Panicked and afraid, Murphy and his wife called 9-1-1.

First responders showed up at the house at 2 a.m. and saved baby Ford. Murphy says he remembers the first responders from that night, “They were incredibly calm and nurturing, and they brought him back to life.”

After the event, Murphy just couldn’t get the first responders off his mind. He noted the support that these first responders must give every day and knew he needed to tell their story.

The show continues to rely on real-life events to keep its stories going. Murphy says they will talk to real first responders and pay attention to actual cases and draw inspiration from them. Murphy says he wants to leave viewers with the uplifting feeling that he had when the first responders left him. He told Variety, “I’m interested in presenting stories that are uplifting and aspirational and that give you hope, given viewers hope that here is good out there.”

The drama features an all-star cast

The Fox series delivers powerful stories, but it is the standout cast that really brings it home. 9-1-1 features a veteran cast of actors who have a history of delivering memorable performances.

The cast is led by Golden Globe winner Angela Bassett. Bassett is best known for her roles in What’s Love Got to Do With It, Black Panther, and How Stella Got Her Groove Back.

Peter Krause joins Bassett, playing station captain Bobby Nash. Krause has had many critically acclaimed TV roles including Parenthood, Six Feet Under, and Sports Night. Over his 30 years in Hollywood, Krause has been a part of many long-running television series.

Ghost Whisperer alum, Jennifer Love Hewitt plays Maddie Kendall. Like Krause and Bassett, Hewitt also has an impressive resume. Her past shows include Party of Five, Criminal Minds, and The Client List. Hewitt is also known for her role in the horror film I Know What You Did Last Summer.

There have already been talks of spin-offs

After season one ended, Murphy said that there were already talks of spin-offs. He said the show’s success is a credit to the network’s marketing department and Fox head Dana Walden.

Murphy thinks that there is plenty of potential for a spin-off. He told Indiewire that he could see the show possibly in a different city. But he did say that even though talks are happening about a spin-off, nothing would happen until the end of season two.

No surprise here — FOX just announced that it’s number one drama will be returning for season three. Fox execs noted the show’s stellar cast when announcing their decision to renew the show. Fox president Michael Thorn said, “‘9-1-1 redefined’ what a procedural series can be, consistently delivering edge-of-your-seat emergencies, mixed with emotional story arcs and incredible performances from one of the most powerful teams of actors on television,” he continued, “Kudos to Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk, Tim Minear and their entire crew, as well as the amazing cast anchored by Angela Bassett, Peter Krause and Jennifer Love Hewitt for raising the bar week after week.”
