Chilling joke Fred West’s lodger made after seeing him carry ‘carpet’ to cellar

A former tenant of Fred West told how she joked about bodies being in his cellar after seeing him taken a roll of carpet there.

But little did Gill Brett realise the serial killer was in the midst of a murder spree and was burying his victims in the basement or garden.

One expert said the 58-year-old was lucky to have escaped unharmed while living with West and his wife Rose at their “House of Horrors” home in Gloucester.

Speaking for the first time about her days at 25 Cromwell Street in 1978 aged 17, Gill told of the moment she spotted West “moving something out of the van”.

She said: “[It was] carpet rolled up on his shoulder, going down the cellar.

“I said, ‘Bloody hell, Fred, it’s a wonder you don’t have dead bodies down there haven’t ya.’ It was a joke.

“We never questioned why he was to and from the van and up and down the cellar. Fred had a rough and ready look about him.”

Gill also recalled a chilling moment where Fred’s brother Brett “pressed himself” against her.

She said: "My back was by the fireplace wall and put his arms on the wall and I was squashed in the middle.

"He said, ‘What are we going to do with this one then, Fred?’ I did laugh it off and got out of that situation but when I got to my room I was shaking.”
