9 best make-up brush sets of 2022 to really up your application game

Make-up brushes are a tricky purchase. Faced with the shiny glory of a fancy lipstick, this season’s must-have eyeshadow palette or the “it” new foundation, it can be difficult to spend your hard-earned ducats on something as pedestrian as new applicator tools.

But change your thinking, because those applicator tools have so much more to offer. The truth is, the best make-up brushes can transform the make-up you already own. For example, they can take your regular foundation and up your blending skills to the point that it will look and feel like the new anti-ageing marvel. And if you are splashing out on new make-up, having the right tools to apply it will make all the difference.

How to look after your brushes

Good quality make-up brushes really will last you for as long as you need them if you look after them well. While the occasional mishap might befall one brush, if you invest in a good set it may well be the only time you have to make that outlay.

To clean them, it’s worth getting a proper brush cleanser. Most brands that sell brushes also sell cleansers, although you can also use mild shampoo or soap, such as internet favourite Dr. Bronner’s Rose Pure-Castile Liquid Soap, £13.29 here.

Clean them gently about once a week. For stubborn build up, work in the cleanser by swirling the brush gently around the palm of your hand so that it foams up, then rinse. Push the water out with your fingers then leave to dry fully overnight.

Best make-up brush sets to buy in 2022

Best for the personal touch

Sculpted by Aimee Pink Classics The Deluxe Brush Set, currently£54 here

This set is so cute and so practical. The brushes come in a small hard case where they are packed into the inside of the lid, leaving plenty of room for all your other make-up to go in the same place. For travelling, this is probably our favourite set. Best of all you can get the case engraved with your name for just £4 extra here.

The set itself is five brushes but each is double ended, so you’re basically getting 10. Blush and bronze, foundation and concealer, shade and definer, brow and liner and buff and blend – everything you need for a beautifully sculpted look.

Best for creating perfect skin

IT Cosmetics Beautiful Together Flawless Finish 3-Piece Brush Set, £80 here

IT Cosmetics make some of the finest brushes around, with their award winning “Heavenly Luxe” brush hairs for an ultra-plush feel and giving an airbrushed finish. They really do make blending a breeze. Each of the brushes has tens of thousands of synthetic bristles which are bound to make them drop resistant.

Featuring a powder brush, an asymmetric blush brush and a double ended foundation brush, all in a nicely portable travel size that doesn’t compromise on quality.

Best for budding make-up artists

EDY London Essential 8-brush Set 505, £60 here

If you’re going to trust anyone on whether brushes are professional grade, it’s got to be a make-up artist. This set is created by Edy Kurowska – known as Edy London – who is the go to lash technician for Trinny Woodall and make-up artist to the stars. They’re vegan and cruelty-free of course, as well as being incredibly soft for perfect blending. But it’s the tiny practical touches that set them apart, such as matte paint on the handles for improved grip.

Also we love that it comes in four colours: yellow, turquoise, pink and grey. This 8-piece set is great value for money and has everything you need.

Best bargain set

e.l.f. Snowglobe 6-Piece Blend and Brush Set, £15 here

This bargain brand has been pumping out incredible value since they first started with their £1 cosmetics and this set is true to their value for money form. It’s actually worth twice the price tag. It’s also brilliant if you prefer sponge application to brushes as it comes with two sponges for your foundation and concealer, then four brushes for the rest of your make-up.

Also it looks like something out of a Frozen film; we’re certain Elsa would approve. Grab it and don’t let it go.

Best for eyes and lips

LaraFaye Royal Blue 9-piece Luxe Eye Brush Set Inc Precision Lip Brush, £32 here

If the joy of make-up for you is intricate eyes or fabulous lips, this set is the dream with nine brushes for an incredible price. You can do any and all kinds of blending and buffing and the precision eye liner brush in particular is great for practising flicks. They’re all full length which makes them easy to hold and use.

And though this is an eye set, we love that it includes a lip brush too. If you’ve never tried applying a vampy red lip with a brush instead of straight from the bullet, do. It makes such a difference.

Best eco choice

EcoTools Daily Essentials Total Face 5-piece kit, £13 here

The best way to create less waste in the world is to use less stuff, and with that in mind, we’re really excited by the new Interchangeables collection from EcoTools. It comes with just two brush handles – one large (green) and one small (blue), but five interchangeable brushes that you just screw on.

The handles are made with sustainable bamboo, and the packaging is biodegradable paper and plantable seeded stickers, to grow into wildflowers.

Best pro-level kit

Spectrum Sculpt Bundle Box, currently £182 here

Spectrum covers everything when it comes to brushes, from fun collaborations with brands like Disney and brilliant collections created with make-up artists like Katie Jane Hughes, to this: the pro-level kit that has all the brushes you want. It’s an investment (these brushes will last you the distance), and it’s currently on special offer (normally it’s £325).

With 30 brushes, it also comes with two storage canisters: one for blush and base brushes, the other for colour cosmetics tools.

Best for beginners

Lottie London 5-piece Brush Set,£25 here

In general you get what you pay for when it comes to make-up brushes. That doesn’t always mean the most expensive are the best though, and this set is a great example of a good price point for a great product. It’s ideal you’re just dabbling in brushes and want to get started with something practical and decent.

We also like that they are double ended, so they’re good for travelling with and there’s no excuse not to fit them in your make-up bag when you’re out and about.

Best for users with extra needs

Kohl Kreatives The Flex Collection, £44.99 here

If you find it difficult to hold on to a slim make-up brush, this set is truly innovative. With thick handles, the brushes stand upright on their own, making them easy to pick up. They are ergonomic so you can grasp them with more control, and the bristles are set at 90º which makes application easier and allows you to sit closer to the mirror as you apply.

They brand is also a charity so proceeds go towards Kohl Kares, empowering people through the power of make-up.
