7 signs you’re over-exfoliating your skin according to an expert

Over exfoliation is a thing unfortunately and there is such a thing as too much scrubbing – who knew?

In fact there are lots of traps in skincare routines that can lead to over-exfoliating and luckily for the excessive exfoliators amongst you the experts at ZO Skin Health are here to help.

Here are the signs that you need to put the cleanser down…

Your face is too shiny

Apparently, if your face is beginning to look like a disco ball then it’s time to take a step back on the exfoliation.

Light reflects off over-exfoliated skin because its natural texture has been smoothed and again, yes, there’s such a thing as too much smoothness.

Your breakouts are getting worse

If too many spots are showing up uninvited then the time has come to stop scrubbing so aggressively. According to ZO Skin Health , excessive exfoliation strips your skin from its natural moisture, prompting sebaceous glands to produce more oil to compensate for the loss of hydration.

Your skin feels like it was sunburned

Feeling like you’ve been sat on the sun lounger Margherita in hand for a little longer than you should’ve? This could well be a sign that you’ve over-exfoliated.

Redness, itchiness and puffiness are all signs that an inflammatory response to over exfoliation has occurred. The top layer acts like a shield against allergens, irritants and pollutants and, as ZO Skin Health informs us, when this natural barrier is comprised, your skin becomes more susceptible to irritants and environmental damage.

Your skin feels like crepe paper

No one wants more fine lines than normal on their face, nor do they want their skin to feel flaky, and if this is happening then it’s a sign of over exfoliation too.

Sometimes when you’re scrubbing away it means your ridding yourself of healthy skin cells and lipids that help your skin retain its natural hydration levels.

Your skin becomes dry

Perhaps the most obvious factor – dry skin. When your skin becomes dry due to over exfoliation you may well notice dry patches that make you want to reach for the moisturiser.

An increase in acne

If you’ve got a serious case of acne overload then the time has come to moderate the amount you exfoliate. Excessive skin rubbing can waken the skin so it can’t defend against bacteria, so the main form of debris is broken down and pimples form more easily than usual.

Your skin feels tight

If your skin feels particularly tight after washing then it could well be due to over exfoliation and this is best to avoid because it can cause other skin elated issues such as cracked dry skin.
