Mum removes dentures & shows off gummy smile after losing her teeth during pregnancy

WHILE it's well-known that pregnancy can cause hair loss in women, people aren't as aware that it can also lead to dental problems, with some losing their teeth.

One mum has bravely opened up about her dental struggle while pregnant and has since found herself going viral on social media, after people praised her for being so open about now having to wear dentures.

Alicia, a 36-year-old mum from New York, explained that she now has to wear snap-in dentures due to tooth decay and shared a video of her taking her dentures out to reveal what she would look like without them.

Wanting to show everyone how "hot and beautiful" mums look with or without their dentures, she said: "Hi, I'm Alicia. I'm the girl with the snap-in dentures.

"I'm here to show you today what we look like with or without, are you ready?"

Posing with her teeth in, Alicia then removed both her top and bottom dentures and said: "Let's start a trend, I want to show everyone how hot we look, how beautiful we look with or without."

Alicia, who is known as @princxssglitterhead on TikTok, has dedicated her page to sharing her story and revealed in follow-up videos that she lost her teeth while pregnant with her first daughter 15 years ago.

She explained: "I don’t think I ate properly. I wasn’t as healthy as I should have been. So the baby had to strip things out of my body that I didn’t know I didn’t have… mostly calcium from [my] teeth."

Alicia suffered an extreme loss of calcium, which led to her teeth becoming "hollow and brittle on the inside and randomly falling out".

She explains in further videos shared online that she was unaware she was "genetically predisposed to extreme calcium loss" during pregnancy.

Alicia explained: "I had no cavities in my early childhood up until I was 18 or 19, nothing… I got married when I was 20 and we had our first baby when I was 21. My teeth broke out during that first pregnancy and it was the first time that I started having really bad dental problems.

"You couldn't see on the outside but you could see it when the tooth would fall out and you'd like inside it and there was nothing left in there – the baby just took everything out of me."

She revealed: "When I was 24 I had my second daughter and after that pregnancy, I decided to invest $10,000 (£7.2k) into saving my top teeth and I did a full restoration."

"I went to the dentist every single week for a whole year… after nine years one of the bridges abscessed and the whole thing had to come out and I was ready for dentures, so I got snap-ins."

Can pregnancy cause your teeth to fall out?

According to the NHS, hormonal changes during pregnancy can affect the teeth and gums.

Calcium loss can also occur during pregnancy and breastfeeding due to the baby having an increased need for calcium – which is drawn from the mother's bones.

For some women, they're gums can be prone to swelling and may bleed during pregnancy. This is usually due to a build up of plaque, as a change in hormones while expecting can make gums and teeth more vulnerable.

Ways to keep teeth and gums healthy while pregnant
It's important to keep both teeth and gums clean and healthy while pregnant. The best ways to do so are:

  • Clean teeth carefully twice a day for at least 2 minutes
  • Floss once a day to help prevent plaque build-up
  • Avoid regularly having sugary drinks and sugary foods
  • Avoid mouthwashes that contain alcohol.
  • Don't smoke
  • Rinse with salt daily to help reduce gum inflammation

Fellow mums have been praising Alicia for being so open about her experience with her teeth and calling out the stigma often associated with dentures.

One person commented: "Yes plz normalize young ppl with dentures!! As a dental assistant I hate seeing how much it affects my patients self esteem. You're so beautiful (sic)."

Another said: "Thank you for being so real. Our real authentic selves are to be celebrated. U are beautiful (sic)."

One woman in a similar situation to Alicia could relate, but complimented her on her confidence. They said: "I wish I had the confidence you have my friend. My husband has never seen me without them."

A fourth added: "Thanks for being so transparent. Beautiful either way!"
