March Is Women's History Month — Celebrate With These Gorgeous Artist-Made Tees
It’s March, which means Women’s History Month has officially kicked off. This year, you can celebrate by shopping Old Navy’s new tee collection, created by two talented women artists.
As part of its ongoing Project WE initiative, Old Navy partners with diverse artists to create inclusive graphics to honor important cultural moments and movements. For Women’s History Month, the brand tapped Shar Tuiasoa and Shawna X to design T-shirts that capture the theme, “the power of a woman.”
Tuiasoa’s tee is a white shirt with a whimsical illustration of three women against a vibrant landscape of trees and plants — a nod to her Polynesian background. It bears the slogan, “Powerful like a woman.” Of the inspiration behind her design, Tuiasoa explains, “All women are powerful, and we have so many ways of exemplifying that power. It can be big, it can be small, it can be loud or quiet, it can be found in our individuality or in the strength of a community.”
Based in Kailua, Hawaii, Tuiasoa feels most powerful when she is connected to her Pacific Islander heritage through her relationship to the land and the ocean. She founded the Punky Aloha Studio in 2018, an illustration studio that specializes in her signature dreamy, pop-punk-inspired aesthetic.
The second T-shirt from Brooklyn-based graphic designer Shawna X is a more abstract take on the theme. It also features a white background, and it showcases a vividly colored tulip surrounded by lipstick-traced smiling mouths.
“Tulips are powerful, yet sensuous, and that’s the essence of a woman,” Shawna X says of her design. “The power is deep in the feminine divine.” She views a powerful woman as “someone who is open, compassionate, supporting — all of which comes from a place of strength.”
Ultimately, the purpose of the collection is to highlight that there is no one right way to express your power as a woman. As Tuiasoa says, “It comes in so many forms and it is OURS. It belongs to ourselves and cannot be taken away.”
Old Navy will also be donating $1 million to Boys & Girls Clubs of America community art programs across the country as part of its efforts to support young artists. You can learn more here and shop Tuiasoa and Shawna X’s amazing tees right now.
