Badgley Mischka Pre-Fall 2021

Mark Badgley and James Mischka can see the optimistic side of these uncertain times. Even during a pandemic, they opened a new store in Palm Beach, Fla., which they said is holding its own and picking up for the holidays. For their pre-fall look book, they’re communicating a mood of light at the end of a dark tunnel with flowy, colored dresses in varying lengths.

The designers continued spring’s narrative of optimism and ease with a buy-now-wear-now collection underscored by bright colors and lightweight fabrications to help transition back out in the world next June and July when the collection hits stores. They cut teal, moss green and printed georgette, mousselines, stretch crepe and laces with ease and their brand of drama and elegance while utilizing minimal embellishments like pom-poms and fringe for an element of fun. There was great movement to a fiery red chiffon caftan, leggy Black Forest print caftan and petal pink chiffon babydoll dress, and casual decadence to the sweep of a pleated green gown. A rose-colored racer dress was another highlight incorporating asymmetric design and a half-pleated chiffon skirt.

“Even though we’re shipping this collection in summer, she’s been wearing brights and florals and pastels and fun colors for months,” Badgley said, adding: “I think the true challenge for this time of year is she still wants clothes that are feminine and beautiful but nothing too ornate or ostentatious.”
