Tiki Barber to step on stage in ‘Kinky Boots’
Tiki Barber is trading cleats for stilettos as he joins the Broadway cast of “Kinky Boots.”
The 43-year-old former New York Giants running back strutted onto “Good Morning America” Tuesday to announce his upcoming limited run as Don in the Broadway musical.
“I’m appreciative of my wife now when she wears those six-inch heels,” Barber joked with Lara Spencer and former teammate Michael Strahan. “This is kind of amazing but also terrifying!”
Barber will take on the role of Don, a worker at the Price & Son shoe factory in Northampton, England. A misogynist, Don is put off by the factory’s newest designer: Lola, a drag queen from London. Lola is brought to Price & Sons to help design “two-and-a-half feet of irresistible, tubular sex,” or in simple terms, a stiletto boot that can support a man’s weight.
“I am so excited to be making my Broadway debut in ‘Kinky Boots,’” Barber said in a press release on Tuesday. “I was very fortunate to be part of the New York Giants for 10 years and feel incredibly lucky to be joining another New York institution: Broadway.”
During a photo shoot last month, Barber caught footballs while dressed in the thigh-high red boots and danced around to “The Greatest Showman” soundtrack, a source told Page Six.
“He requested to listen to ‘Greatest Showman’ at the shoot because he listened to it while training for the New York Marathon,” they said. “It gets him pumped!”
Barber is currently a board member of KultureCity, a nonprofit organization focused on promoting acceptance and inclusion for individuals with autism and their families. His experience as an advocate has him particularly excited about his role, which will give him another opportunity to further promote tolerance.
“There are so many moments of misogynism and non-acceptance that you feel [Don] going through,” he said. “And being in NFL locker rooms for so many years, you felt that sometimes. Society has changed and locker rooms have as well, and I think this is kind of an example of that.”
Barber will make his “Kinky Boots” debut on Jan. 21, 2019.
