Queen To Stream Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert In Support Of WHO
Queen in collaboration with YouTube will stream the 1992 “Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert for AIDS Awareness” on the band’s page on Friday, May 15th.
The concert will stream live at 2 p.m. ET/11 a.m. PT and will be available to watch for the next 48 hours. The special stream will raise money for the World Health Organization and its COVID-19 relief efforts.
For every dollar donated during the stream, Google will match with a $2 donation as part of its ongoing Google/YouTube UN Foundation fundraiser.
The “Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert” took place at Wembley Stadium in London on April 20th, 1992. The show featured Queen’s surviving members– Brian May, Roger Taylor and John Deacon as well as and other artists like David Bowie, Robert Plant, Roger Daltrey, Tony Iommi, James Hetfield, Seal, George Michael, Elton John, Axl Rose and Liza Minnelli.
The show also featured individual performances from Metallica, U2, Def Leppard, Guns N’ Roses and Spinal Tap.
The profits from the concert were used to launch The Mercury Phoenix Trust, which has raised in excess of 17 million pounds for over 1,000 projects in 57 countries in the ongoing fight against AIDS worldwide.
