Prince Harry and Meghan Markle ‘secretly got engaged months before Palace announcement’

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were "engaged in secret" and were "actually dating for less than a year before the proposal", it has been claimed.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex announced that they had got engaged in late November 2017.

At the time, Harry, 37, and Meghan, 41, posed outside Kensington Palace alongside a royal statement which claimed she had said yes "earlier this month".

"His Royal Highness and Ms. Markle became engaged in London earlier this month. Prince Harry has informed Her Majesty The Queen and other close members of his family. Prince Harry has also sought and received the blessing of Ms. Markle's parents," the Palace said in a statement at the time.

But it has since been claimed that the Royal couple may have actually been engaged around four months earlier than the Royal statement indicates.

This would mean that Meghan had already said "yes" when she appeared on the cover of Vanity Fair to confirm she was dating Harry.

The reports have been made in a new book, which claims they were "privately engaged" months before their public announcement, but didn't want anyone to know.

Valentine Low's Courtiers: The Hidden Power Behind The Crown, discusses Meghan's interview with Vanity Fair in October that year.

"The interview was, in effect, Meghan’s big launch," it reads.

"The couple were not officially engaged — though everyone in Kensington Palace knew they had been privately engaged since the late summer — but this was Meghan putting herself out there in a confident, pro-active way."

OK! has contacted Harry and Meghan's representative for comment.

Harry and Meghan went on to marry on Saturday May 19, 2018 in St George's Chapel at Windsor Castle, which was watched by nearly 2 billion people across the globe.

They have since welcomed son Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor, on May 6, 2019, and daughter Lilibet Diana, on June 4, 2021.
