Good Morning Britain host Piers Morgan, 55, has blasted Dominic Cummings after he spoke about the reasons behind his coronavirus lockdown breach to visit his parents’ home in Durham in a press conference today.
The presenter spoke out about Dominic’s statement in view of his 7.5 million Twitter followers after the senior adviser to Prime Minister Boris Johnson said he drove to Barnard Castle to “test his eyesight”.
Dominic explained his eyesight had been affected by his illness after he and his wife Mary came down with suspected coronavirus symptoms, so he went for a short drive to see if he could travel safely before returning to London.
Cummings admitted he drove from his family’s Durham home to nearby Barnard Castle on Easter Sunday in his second trip during the COVID-19 lockdown, claiming it was on day 15 of his illness.
“It was reasonable and sensible to make a short journey before embarking on a five-hour drive”, the MP said.
“We walked about 10-15 metres from the car to the riverbank nearby. We sat there for about 15 minutes – we had no interactions with anybody,” he added.
Piers criticised Dominic’s claims about his eyesight in a series of tweets, with the first saying: “Oh what a load of f**king b******s.. he drove 30 miles to the castle to check his eyesight??! Shut up Cummings, we’re not mugs.”
The outspoken journalist then asked in a later post: “If his eyesight was damaged, why was he driving a car? #cummings.”
