‘Observer Magazine’ Calls Shawn Mendes the “Prince of Pop” … But Justin Bieber Is Not Having It

The Observer Magazine has singer Shawn Mendes on its cover for a story called “Prince of Pop” in its current issue. In the story, Shawn talks about “wholesomeness” and “authenticity” but confesses that it can be hard being seen as a “nice guy” while also being the “red-hot poster-boy of pop.”

“[T]o be a nice person is the best thing in the world,” Shawn tells The Observer, “but, yeah, I’m 20 and I just want to have fun. What I don’t want to do is live the rest of my life thinking, ‘I wouldn’t do that because I’m known as Prince Charming.’ The second that someone corners you into a personality, you don’t want to be that person any more.”

However, it appears that one pop star felt a little uncomfortable with Shawn getting handed so many accolades by The Observer — and was certainly not interested in just relinquishing the title of “Prince of Pop” without a bit of a fight.

When Shawn posted a pic of the cover and thanked The Observer for the article, Justin Bieber slid into Shawn’s Instagram comments to let him know he still needs to beat the the reigning Prince if he wants to become the new Prince. “Gonna to have to break a few more records,” Justin wrote, “to dethrone my title there bud.”

“But if you want we can play hockey for it,” Justin continued. “But I hear your a real bender on the ice … we could just drop the buckets and tilt for it.”

For his part, Shawn seemed to take Justin’s comments in a good natured way, while also pushing back. “@JustinBieber LOL,” Shawn replied, “any time any day you just let me know !!!!!”
