Motsi Mabuse: Strictly judge addresses Darcey Bussell ‘I’m completely different’

Motsi Mabuse, 38, looks to have been settling in to the Strictly Come Dancing 2019 panel well since taking over from Darcey Bussell, 50, at the beginning of the series.

Despite some controversy surrounding her appointment, due to her fears she might be biased towards her younger sister, Strictly professional Oti Mabuse, 29, her personality and judging skills seem to have gone down well with fans.

Opening up on her predecessor Darcey in an interview with the November issue of Good Housekeeping, Motsi insisted: “I’m a completely different character.

“I’m just me and Darcey is Darcey.

“She’s so beautiful and elegant and I’m just different to her,” Motsi added.

Darcey confirmed she was quitting Strictly after seven series back in April, saying her time on the BBC show had been a “completely privilege”.

She emphasised that she was “not leaving because of any upset or disagreement”, saying: “I am just stepping away to give more focus to my many other commitments in dance, after seven truly wonderful years that I can’t imagine having one any better.”

Meanwhile, speaking out on the process of landing the job on the Strictly panel, Motsi admitted: “It took a while…

“I said, ‘It’s down to destiny. If it’s going to happen, it’s going to happen, so just be cool with it.’”

Motsi, who has been a judge on the German version of Strictly since 2011, also addressed working with and judging her sister Oti.

“I’m not nervous about working with Oti because we’ve done it before,” she told the publication.

“I’ve been teaching her since she could walk and we have a big sense of trust as sisters.

“We’re professional at what we do and we want to get that professionalism across,” she continued. “We want to go into this with fresh energy and have fun.”

Last week, Motsi dismissed concerns about bias towards Oti during an interview on The One Show.

“My sister is a brilliant dancer and so are the other dancers, we all know that,” she said.

“I’m looking at the whole big picture. This show, it’s so loved… It’s got so [much] positive energy.”

She said she would avoid aiming any negativity towards Oti, adding: “Me doing something so negative would be unfair to everyone.”

Motsi has already made a name for herself on Strictly with her effervescent personality and carefully considered constructive criticism.

She even snagged herself a catchphrase within the first live show, making a splash with her exclamations of “Bam!”
