Monty Don, 65, will be appearing in tonight’s episode of Gardeners’ World on BBC Two. However, the presenter has previously opened up about how his mental health was impacted as his and wife Sarah Don’s business struggled.

Before finding fame on Gardeners’ World, Monty and his wife Sarah ran a successful jewellery business together.

Operating out of a shop in Knightsbridge, their business venture attracted clients like Diana, Princess of Wales.

However, in the late 1980s, they hit hard times and fell into debt.

Monty opened up about this period in an unearthed interview, revealing what his wife said to him.

When they were at the peak of money troubles, Monty said he would spend more time working in the garden.

He recalled how his wife once told him: “You have a streak of craziness that is endlessly tiring.”

Speaking back in September, he said that during this time, he fell into a deep depression.

Sarah was the one who urged him to seek help as their children would ask “Why is Daddy always crying?”

Monty added to The Times: “She said you have to see a doctor because I can’t cope with you and three small children and our life as it is.

“I need help and the only way I can get help is for you to get help.

“So I did that classic thing of going to the doctor and saying my knee hurt and then he said, ‘Anything else the matter?’

“Antidepressants helped initially and I had cognitive behavioural therapy on the NHS, which was very good.

“And I did use a light box; that was also good.”

Monty is now a hugely successful gardening presenter on the small screen.

He is much-loved for fronting Gardeners’ World, as well as his numerous books.

Fans were disappointed recently when he shared how he was taking a break from the BBC show.

Posting on Twitter in front of his 223,000 Twitter followers, he said: “Having been delayed by a year due to Covid I am off today (and for the next four days) to a studio to read ‘My Garden World’ as an audio book.”

However, when one queried if he would be “back in time for Gardeners’ World”, Monty broke the news.

He replied: “No – Adam will take the helm to cover.”

This means next week’s show will instead be hosted by Adam Frost as Monty takes time off.

Gardeners’ World airs on BBC Two at 9pm on Fridays.
