Miriam Margolyes sparks controversy over death comment about Boris Johnson
Miriam Margolyes, who is known for her roles in Harry Potter and Call The Midwife, made the controversial comment during her appearance on Channel 4 show The Last Leg yesterday. The 78-year-old didn’t hold back as she addressed Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s handling of the coronavirus pandemic.
The actress said she “wanted Boris to die” before adding that such a thought “reflected badly” on her.
When quizzed on the government’s handling of the coronavirus pandemic, Miriam said: “Appallingly, of course, appallingly. It’s a disgrace, it’s a scandal. It’s a public scandal.
“I mean, I had difficulty not wanting Boris Johnson to die. I wanted him to die. Then I thought that will reflect badly on me and I don’t want to be the sort of person that wants people to die.”
The TV star admitted she had a change of heart before taking another swipe at the Prime Minister.

“So then I wanted him to get better, which he did do, he did get better. But he didn’t get better as a human being,” Miriam explained.
“And I really would prefer that. So, we’re in the s**t, basically, here.”
Many viewers took to social media, as many people expressed their outrage over her comments.
Good Morning Britain host Piers Morgan tweeted: “Disgusting. This is where toxic tribalism has got us.. actively wanting people of a different political persuasion to die. Shame on you Ms Margoyles.”
It comes as the broadcaster has been vocal about the Government’s response to the crisis.
A social media user said: “Well I think Miriam Margolyes might have just got herself cancelled on the Last Leg there.”
“Miriam Margolyes is a perfect illustration of why the left keep losing elections; because they’re nasty, hate filled, vicious people without a decent or compassionate thought for anyone who doesn’t agree with them,” another person commented.
A third person added: “Sorry Miriam Margolyes, you blew a lifetime’s achievement in 5 seconds of pure hate.”

“Just because you disagree with politics, you should never want someone to die!!! I never agreed with @jeremycorbyn but I wouldn’t wish him any harm, why do the left have so much anger?” another person remarked.
Other social media users, however, were divided by Miriam’s comments.
One person commented: “Me considering the fact people are getting their knickers in a twist about Miriam Margolyes but not getting equally upset at holding the government accountable for avoidable deaths, including those of NHS workers.”
While another person added: “Watching #thelastleg and #Miriammargolyes is calling out the government for the way they’ve handled the pandemic.”

Miriam’s comments come after Boris was taken to intensive care last month after his COVID-19 symptoms worsened.
Boris was initially taken to hospital for tests after announcing that he had coronavirus and his symptoms included a high temperature and a cough.
At the time, he tweeted: “Last night, on the advice of my doctor, I went into hospital for some routine tests as I’m still experiencing coronavirus symptoms. I’m in good spirits and keeping in touch with my team, as we work together to fight this virus and keep everyone safe.”
Boris has since made a full recovery and has returned to ministerial duties.
