Michelle Obama's Mom Doesn't Think Her Daughter is a "Real" Celebrity

When former First Lady Michelle Obama stepped onto the Grammys stage to join host Alicia Keys, Lady Gaga, Jada Pinkett Smith, and Jennifer Lopez on Sunday, it was easily one of the most surprising and viral moments of the 61st annual ceremony.

The crowed erupted in applause when the former FLOTUS walked out holding hands with her fellow stars. The group followed with an empowering speech, where each woman spoke about what music means to her.

“From the Motown records I wore out on the South Side, to the ‘who run the world’ songs that fueled me through this last decade, music has always helped me tell my story, and I know that’s true for everybody here,” the first lady said. “Whether we like country, rap or rock, music helps us share ourselves, our dignity and sorrows, our hopes and joys. It allows us to hear one another, to invite each other in. Music shows us that all of it matters, every story within every voice, every note within every song.”

Despite the fan love from the audience and the Twittersphere, Michelle’s mother, Marian Shields Robinson, seemed unimpressed with her daughter’s unexpected cameo. The former FLOTUS took to Instagram to share a screenshot of the conversation she had with her mom on Sunday night after she spoke on stage.

“I guess you were a hit at the Grammys,” Robinson messaged Obama with a smiley face emoji sticking its tongue out. Michelle knows her mom’s sense of humor very well, and she calls her out on it. “I’m sitting here with Valerie and this text is so typically you.” She also inquired if her mom saw the speech on TV.

Robinson typed back that she did because her friend Gracie called her, then quipped, “Did you met any of the real stars or did you run right after you were done?”

M.O. reminded her mom that she had told her she’d be at the Grammys, and of course, like all mothers who insist they are right about everything, Robinson texted back: “No you did not. I would have remembered that even though I don’t remember much.”

Obama cracked up at her mom’s joke and sent three laughing emojis along with two texts that said: “I thought I told you… And I Am A real star… by the way….”

Michelle was a such good sport about her mom’s hilarious texts that she decided to share the witty exchange on Instagram, where she captioned the photo: “When your mom doesn’t think you’re a ‘real’ celebrity…Tonight in Phoenix, I shared this text thread from my mom from #Grammys night, and I just had to share it with all of you.”
