Meet the Freaky New Monster in 'Stranger Things' Season 3

Stranger Things season 3 premieres July 4th, 2019, on Netflix.
• The hit series’ third season promises a grotesque new monster.
• Fans have likened it to a creature from Dungeons & Dragons.

And is that a new monster we spy? Season one had the terrifying Demogorgon, season two had the Mind Flayer (and icky-but-adorable demodog D’Artagnan), and season three has… well, watch the trailer and see for yourself. The grotesque being that makes an appearance after the 2:20 mark appears to be the latest monster to pop up in Hawkins:

As has become tradition in the show, it looks like the creature will take its eventual name from Dungeons & Dragons. Some D&D players have compared it to the Gibbering Mouther, a many-limbed monster from the game.

“Now the story of the Gibbering Mouther, to my understanding, is that it’s also some random creature (Humans/Halflings/Slimes) that the Mind Flayers turned into horrifying creatures,” one fan says on Reddit. Might that actually be the end result of some awful transformation? The trailer does show a glimpse of somebody’s skin looking infected—maybe the Mind Flayer is somehow exerting its influence to create an army of squishy soldiers.

In fact, it’s looking pretty likely we’ll see the Mind Flayer again in season three. Also known as the Shadow Monster, it was the main threat from season two, a far more dangerous enemy than the Demogorgon. While that season ended with Eleven using her extraordinary abilities to close the rift between Hawkins and the Upside Down, the Duffer Brothers have hinted that doing so got the beast’s attention, and it is now aware of the extent of her powers.

Additionally, the official series companion book, World Turned Upside Down, includes a quote from producer Shawn Levy in its epilogue which all-but-confirms the return of the Shadow Monster. Here’s what it says, according to ScreenRant:

Wow. If you want to cancel that Fourth of July BBQ and binge Stranger Things instead, we understand.
