Niall Aslam has opened up on why he unexpectedly quit Love Island back in 2018, revealing he spent two weeks in a psychiatric hospital.

The 25 year old, who previously showed off his abs for his Christmas pantomime role last year, took to his Instagram feed to speak out in order to bring more attention to the topic of mental health.

The reality star, who previously spoke about being diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome when he was 10, explained he "ended up watching Love Island in a psychiatric hospital in London."

Dressed in a blue denim jacket with a red rose on it and a grey beanie on his head, he told his 491,000 followers: "The Nightingale hospital in London to be exact. What later I found out is that I had something called stress induced psychosis.

"I did not know what that was so I'm not expecting other people to know it straight off the bat. Essentially what it is that is kind of like when you get so overwhelmed I think you lose touch of reality and basically you kind of hallucinate, you're not aware of what's going on, you're not aware of your surroundings.

"You're not safe, you need other people to look after you."

The TV personality said that after his hallucinatory episode, he fell in to a "really deep depression".

"In my head, while I was there – because obviously I wasn't fully aware of what was going on – I thought what's happened was this is because of my Asperger's," he continued.

"So I remember being in my room and I got a piece of paper, because you're not allowed your phone in there, I wrote down a long post about my Asperger's and I really discovered these mad new abilities and that kind of thing.

"So when I got released, I was left to deal with Love Island not in the right frame of mind at all. I was on so much medication, getting loads of side effects.

"That's why I didn't do many interviews because I was getting a lot of slurred speech from the medication." Niall said he went "cold turkey" on all his medications and explained that it took him a long time to recover.

The star then explained that his goal for taking the time to recount what happened to him all those years ago is to encourage others to check up on their friends and family.

He said it's very easy to wear a mask and hide deep feelings of depression or other mental health problems.

"Everyone thought I was having the best time, but I was having the crisis team around me every morning," he said, before ending his lengthy speech by adding: "I want to have a more open conversation about mental health."
