Love Island’s Jess Shears and Olivia Bowen hit out at pressure to get pregnant

Love Island stars Jess Shears and Olivia Bowen have lashed out at people putting pressure on them to get pregnant now they’re married.

Glamour model Jess, 25, was furious when someone asked her if she was pregnant, admitting it was affecting her body confidence.

Fellow Love Island alum Olivia then brought up the fact she’s just married would have prompted some sections of society to think it’s acceptable to quiz them on the state of their womb.

Devon-native Jess, who married Dom Lever in October after meeting on Love Island in 2017, admitted she was "constantly" being quizzed on her family plans.

The brunette admitted not only was it denting her confidence about her curvy figure, but also found it invasive that people thought it was OK to ask such an intimate question about whether or not she wanted to have a baby.

She tweeted: "Why do girls insist on constantly speculating if I’m pregnant!? Firstly no, I am not pregnant. But seriously can you imagine how s**t it feels and hard to is on your body confidence for at least one person a day to comment on your appearance and ask if you’re pregnant!

"People just need to take a minute and ask themselves if you wouldn’t say it to a stranger in the street then don’t say it online."

Sympathising with Jess was Olivia, who tied the knot with Alex Bowen in September, who was also frustrated with people pressurising her to get procreate.

Olivia, 25, replied: "It’s because you’ve got married as well babe, society wants to grill you into pregnancy because that’s what is expected. I totally feel your pain. Imagine these people don’t ever bloat in their lives must have pure rock hard abs. Sending love."

Jess responded: "Exactly! I just want to eat carbs in peace, is that too much to ask!?"

Meanwhile, one of their followers joined in to point out some couples may be suffering from fertility issues, highlighting yet another reason why it’s not acceptable to ask women such personal questions.

Olivia responded: "So true! There are so many women that struggle to get pregnant and imagine if you had loads of people asking why you haven’t had a kid yet or if you’re pregnant! It’s so damaging I agree."

Following her wedding, Olivia revealed she had "put her foot down" over her husband Alex’s broodiness to start a family, admitting she was focused on her career for now.

She said: "It’s on our radar but we aren’t planning on it any time soon. We’re still working our bums off and we have lots of plans for next year and places we want to travel to.

"We never got married to have children, we got married because we wanted to. Babies will come eventually but not for a couple of years yet."

Jess and Olivia’s comments come after actress Margot Robbie hit out at people asking the same invasive questions.

Margot, who has been married to husband Tom Ackerley for two years, told the Radio Times: "I got married and the first question in almost every interview is, ‘Babies? When are you having one?’ I’m so angry that there’s this social contract. You’re married, now have a baby.

"Don’t presume. I’ll do what I’m going to do.”

Jennifer Aniston also broached the issue in a recent interview, saying she was sick of the narrative of "poor Jen" because she was divorced and childfree at 49.

She told Elle magazine: "We live in a society that messages women: By this age, you should be married; by this age, you should have children… That’s a fairytale.

"That’s the mould we’re slowly trying to break out of. What quantifies happiness in someone’s life isn’t the ideal that was created in the ’50s. It’s not like you hear that narrative about any men."
