Loose Women star Saira Khan says exercise helps with her sex life as she gushes over her husband
When new magazine chatted to Saira Khan, no topic was off limits. From her sex life to her mental health, the Loose Women star admits that “the more taboo the subject, the better”.
Saira had just finished a gym session after recently embarking on a new fitness regime. “I’ve been working with personal trainer Bradley Simmonds and I feel fabulous,” she says.
Along with the physical benefits of exercise, the 49-year-old, who is mum to son Zac, 11, and eight-year-old daughter Amara, tells new it’s improved her mental state – as well as her libido!
Here, Saira also opens up about how hubby Steve Hyde, who she married in 2004, really feels about her honesty on Loose Women and why their marriage works so well…

Saira, you look amazing! Are you feeling more confident with age?
One hundred per cent. At nearly 50 I’m on this journey where I’m thinking, “What is the best that my body can be?” For me, it’s about pushing physical boundaries. All I’ve done is become a bit more active and I eat breakfast, lunch, dinner and one snack a day and my body is transforming in front of my eyes.
Has it helped you mentally?
Yeah. There was a period not so long ago when I found it hard to get out of bed and was sluggish and negative. I thought, “Why am I feeling like that?” And it’s because I wasn’t doing anything productive or being grateful for what I have. People think that mental health is about being depressed, but I think it’s about checking in on yourself and your emotions.
You’re always honest on Loose Women, but is there anything you wouldn’t feel comfortable discussing on the panel?
No, there’s absolutely nothing that I wouldn’t talk about. People say, “Is nothing sacred?” and I’m like, “No!” For me, the more taboo the subject, the better it is.
What does your husband think?
I think he’s embarrassed most of the time. But behind every strong woman there’s a very strong man. In my case, I’ve got somebody who is on my level. He’s my mate and we inspire each other. I’m very lucky, but with any relationship you’ve got to put the hard work in.
What are Steve’s worst habits?
Taking the milk out of the bloomin’ fridge and not putting it back after he’s made a cup of tea! It’s those niggly things. He’ll offer to do the washing up and then it takes him hours. I’m like, “Just do it!” But that’s not really about him, that’s more about me. I’ve got to pick my battles. One thing I’ve learnt about growing older is you’re in control of your own emotions and you can’t keep blaming other people.
What would he say yours are?
He’d 100 per cent say I’m always late for things. Not for work, but I’m always late for him. I think I do that on purpose because he’s so anally punctual and it just drives me crazy. I do it to wind him up!
So what’s the secret to a happy marriage?
Communication. The times I’ve struggled are when I haven’t been open with Steve and just coped on my own. But you do need to check in on the relationship. We respect each other and let each other breathe. That independence is really something you have to find.

Do you think a good sex life is important, too?
Absolutely! There have been times when I’ve thought, “That’s it! I’m never going to have sex again.” The menopause does affect your libido. But the more I use my body and get in the gym, that’s when my libido goes through the roof. I think exercise improves your sex life.
Coleen Nolan revealed she hasn’t had sex in three years. What do you think about that?
She’s one of my very best friends and she’s such a sexy woman. The fact she doesn’t feel like that was so sad for me. I’m going to try to get her to love herself a bit more because she’s a beautiful woman and she needs to see it.
Would you ever have cosmetic surgery?
As you get older and you have children, your body does change. I’m not going to sit here and judge any woman who has something done that makes her feel good about herself. But I would say that if you’re in your 20s and your early 30s, I don’t think you should be doing anything to your body because you don’t need to. I’ve had a bit of Botox done, I have facials, I go to the gym and I eat well, so that’s what I’m all about.
Do you see yourself on the Loose Women panel for the foreseeable future?
I think so. I really love my job and I love the women I work with. At the minute I think the panel represents lots of different women out there. As long as they’ll have me, I’ll be on that panel, sharing the truth!
Finally, can you tell us a bit about your work with Operation Smile UK?
I recently became an ambassador and I feel really honoured and privileged to be part of this amazing charity. Every three minutes, a child is born with a cleft lip or cleft palate. In this day and age when we know we’re able to change their lives, I think something has to be done.
Saira is supporting Operation Smile UK’s first women’s mission to Oujda in Morocco on 5-14 March. Visit operationsmile.org for more details.
