Kevin Hart Believes His Accident Was God Telling Him ‘Slow Down’

Kevin Hart has spoken publicly for the first time since he suffered serious back injuries during a car accident in September. The comedian shared a video to his YouTube channel, in which he opened up about how he felt in the aftermath of the accident and provided a glimpse of how he is healing.

“Basically what you realize is that you’re not in control,” he said. “No matter how much you think you’re in control, you’re not in control, and at the end of the day it can all be over.”

Hart then explained that he felt his injuries were a wake-up call, and went on to say that he is working on being a “bigger, better” version of himself as he continues along the road to recovery. “When God talks, you gotta listen,” he said. “I swear, life is funny. Because some of the craziest things that happen to you end up being the things that you needed most. And in this case, I honestly feel like God told me to ‘sit down, you’re moving too fast and you’re doing too much.'”

Hart sustained his injuries when his vintage Plymouth went off the road and collided with an embankment in Malibu Hills — he was in the passenger seat. His accident prompted an outpouring of well wishes from his celebrity friends, including Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, who joked: “These things happen in life, and thankfully he was strapped in nicely to his car seat.”

In addition to updating fans on his progress, the major message of Hart’s video was gratitude: he isn’t taking anything for granted any more. “Sometimes you can’t see the things that you’re meant to see. But after my accident, I see things differently: I see things in a whole new perspective,” he said. “My appreciation for life is through the roof. I’m thankful for my family, my friends, I’m thankful for the people who simply ride with me and been with me, because you stood by me. My fans. Thankful for all your love and support. So don’t take today for granted, because tomorrow’s not promised… I’m thankful for life, I’m thankful for simply still being here.

Hart ended the video by saying he is well and truly on “the road to being a bigger, better version of me,” and that is he “looking forward to an amazing 2020.”
