Kate Middleton officially replaces Prince Harry as patron of English Rugby

Kate Middleton has announced she's taken over Prince Harry's role as Patron of the Rugby Football League and the Rugby Football Union.

The news was confirmed on the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge's official Instagram account as they posted a clip of Kate, 40, with a ball in her hand as it's passed from player to player.

In the caption, they shared: "I am so thrilled to become Patron of the Rugby Football League and Rugby Football Union – two fantastic organisations who are committed to harnessing the power that sport can have in bringing communities together and helping individuals flourish.

"I look forward to working with them across all levels of the games, and to cheering England on in what promises to be an exciting year for both sports! C".

A statement from Kensington Palace shared: " These new patronages, which have been given to The Duchess by Her Majesty The Queen, closely align with Her Royal Highness' longstanding passion for sport and the lifelong benefits it can provide, both within our communities and on an individual level."

The move will put her in direct competition with her husband Prince William, 39, as he is the patron of the Welsh Rugby Union.

The Duke of Sussex had no choice but to step down from his patronage when he and wife Meghan Markle, 40, quit their roles as senior members of the Royal Family and moved to the US.

Since leaving, the 37 year old has set up life in Los Angeles with his other half and their two children Archie, two, and daughter Lilibet.

He and Meghan have also been busy carving out their careers in the US – making deals with the likes of Netflix and Spotify.
