How Tom Jones admitted his wife beat him ‘black and blue’ over his infidelities
Sir Tom is now one of the main coaches on the popular talent show The Voice UK, which is now available on ITV. Since the Sixties, he has led a successful career with his hits frequently topping the charts – particular singles include ‘Sex Bomb’ and ‘It’s Not Unusual’. He was then knighted for his services to music by the Queen in 2006.
However, Sir Tom was not just known for his musical talents – he developed a reputation as a womaniser early on in his career, despite being married.
His wife Melinda, who went by the name of Linda, stayed with him until her death in April 2016. They were childhood sweethearts and married at the young age of 16.
They later had one son called Mark, yet the singer’s persistent infidelities often made their relationship tense.
Sir Tom confessed several years ago that his wife once “beat him black and blue” after reading the latest coverage of his affairs.
Writing in the Daily Mail in 2006, Clemmie Moodie said: “After having countless affairs during their 49-year marriage, Sir Tom Jones could hardly argue hat he didn’t have it coming.
“He has revealed that his womanising ways once caused his long-suffering wife to beat him black and blue.
“Linda, who has stood by the 66-year-old singer throughout the decades of well-publicised philandering, snapped after reading about one infidelity in a newspaper.”
During an interview on American television, Sir Tom said: “She beat me up physically one night.
“I said, ‘Look, I’m sorry,’ and she’d got the newspaper there.
“She said, ‘You…’ I said, ‘There it is [pointing at chin],’ and she went ‘Bang!’ And then started kicking me.”
Ms Moodie continued: “Sir Tom did not say when the battering took place or which affair caused his wife to crack. But there is no shortage of candidates.”
Speaking to The Sunday Times Magazine in 2015, he explained Linda had hit him after seeing reports of his affair with a Miss World – Majorie Wallace – on a beach in Barbados in 1976.

The pair were pictured in the papers kissing, leading Linda to “punch” and “shout” at her husband when she found out.
According to Ms Moodie, the singer also confessed at the time that he no longer knew how many women he had slept with, although at other times he has said it was as many as 250 at the height of his fame.
Ms Moodie also explained how Sir Tom fathered an illegitimate child in 1989 with a then-24-year-old model Katherine Berkery.
While he denied paternity, a DNA revealed he was indeed the father.
Back in the interview with the American television show, Sir Tom said that he did not resist his wife’s attack.
He said: “I took it.”
Sir Tom has previously described his marriage as “rock solid”, dismissing his infidelity as “fun and games”.
He also said Linda was the most important person in his life. In 2015, he openly said: “Linda is the love of my life, and she still is, even though she doesn’t look like she did.
“I don’t look like I did, either, but I try my best.”
The two of them were very private about their marriage.
In one of the few interviews she ever sat through, Linda said: “I feel alive when [Tom] comes through the door, whatever the time of day or night is.”
The Voice UK will start again on the ITV on Saturday, 4 January at 8.30pm.
