Hollywood’s finest to run in fear from Ricky’s wit at tonight’s Golden Globes
After Gervais pledged to go “hell for leather” on the media elite in his fifth and final stint as presenter, stars have called to be switched to less conspicuous seating to avoid his barbed comments.
A Hollywood insider said at least four household names have rearranged their allocated seating.
The outspoken British comic, 58, has upset a raft of household names with his cutting remarks during previous ceremonies, including Ben Affleck, Ashton Kutcher, Sir Elton John and Charlie Sheen.
A senior production source at the event, which will be broadcast live by NBC from LA’s Beverly Hilton Hotel, said: “Normally, the biggest stars clamour for the best seats.
“But with Ricky as MC, at least four household names to my knowledge have switched from front row seats to much less prominent spots.
“I think the feeling is that although he writes his monologue and links in advance, anyone in his line of vision on the night might still fall victim to a withering ad-lib put-down.”
Gervais has warned: “I don’t care about the backlash.”
In his parting shot as master of ceremonies at the Golden Globe Awards, he said he does not intend to pull any punches.
He said: “I don’t care who hates me. I don’t care about anyone in the room. I’m not beholden to any of them and I only care about doing a good job. It’s nice to be in that frame of mind – I’ll never be doing this again – because then I can go hell for leather.”
In a US interview prior to tonight’s show, which will be broadcast live in America, he revealed he intends to go out with a bang, saying: “I’m flattered they asked me back after all the awful things I’ve said.”
Targets this year could include Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston, Hollywood’s former Golden Couple.
Both nominees in different categories tonight, they have been the subject of rumours of a romantic reconciliation.
A strong British contingent of nominees is expected to enjoy a taste of success at the ceremony, with Christian Bale, Daniel Craig, Emma Thompson, Taron Egerton, Jonathan Pryce and Roman Griffin Davis all vying for best actor or actress awards in various film categories.
Helena Bonham-Carter, Helen Mirren, Sacha Baron Cohen, Olivia Colman, Jodie Comer and Phoebe Waller-Bridge are all nominees in TV categories, as are British-based shows The Crown, Fleabag and Killing Eve.
Kit Harington, Saoirse Ronan and Laura Dern are also hopefuls.
