George H.W. Bush’s Service Dog Guarding The Former President’s Coffin Will Break Your Heart

One faithful companion wouldn’t leave George H.W. Bush‘s side after the former president died at age 94 on Friday: his service dog, Sully.

On Saturday, Bush’s spokesperson Jim McGrath tweeted out a heartbreaking photo (above) of the sleepy canine guarding the 41st commander in chief’s flag-draped coffin, writing in the post:

“Mission complete.”

Bush welcomed the lab, who is named after pilot hero Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger III, to his family two months after his wife, former First Lady Barbara Bush, passed away in April of this year. Sully was specially trained by America’s Vet Dogs to accommodate the former POTUS’ needs.

According to CNN, the lab will fly with Bush’s coffin to Washington D.C. and will then relocate to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center to assist more veterans like Bush.

Former president George W. Bush re-posted the picture of his late father’s dog on Instagram, writing:

“As much as our family is going to miss this dog, we’re comforted to know he’ll bring the same joy to his new home, Walter Reed, that he brought to 41.”
