Debbie McGee: Strictly Xmas winner’s sudden surprise on stage by late husband Paul Daniels

Debbie McGee, 61, had the fright of her life during a stage performance after her late husband Paul Daniels paid her a surprise visit while she was on stage. During her stint on ITV’s Tenable All Star’s, she revealed Paul’s elaborate plan to give his wife a big shock while she was in the middle of her panto.

When I opened the door, out stepped Paul and that would have been a surprise anyway, but the fact I thought he was in Germany – i jumped about six feet in the air

Host Warwick Davies, initiated the conversation: “Now, I hear your late husband Paul, once surprised you on stage.”

Debbie, who was acting as team captain, giggled and fans knew if the story included her magician husband, there was sure to be an exciting story to follow.

“He did! I was playing Maid Marion in Babes in the Wood at the Theatre Royal in Norwich,” she explained.

“He told me he was in Germany doing a job, but the German airport was snowed in.”

“So, he came up to Norwich and he knew the stage manager so they were in cahoots and he hid in a box for an hour and a half!” She giggled.

The audience couldn’t believe Paul’s dedication to surprising his wife, having to crumple himself into a box for that amount of time.

And, it’s safe to say, Debbie definitely wasn’t expecting to see her husband.

“When I opened the door, out stepped Paul and that would have been a surprise anyway, but the fact that I thought he was in Germany – I jumped about six feet in the air!” she laughed, as the studio erupted.

Debbie was Paul’s second wife, who he met while she was his long-time assistant.

The much-loved magician died of an incurable brain tumour in 2016.

“He always played jokes like that on me though,” Debbie smiled, remembering her husband’s cheeky side.

Debbie’s Tenables team consisted of panto fan-favourites, including Paul Chuckle, Louie Spence, Rustie Lee, Paul Zerdin and his puppet Sam.
