Coronation Street star addresses new storyline after death on soap: ‘Bring me up again?’

Former Coronation Street star Shobna Gulati, 53, played Sunita Alahan, who was killed off the soap eight years. On the cobbles, her on-screen daughter Asha Alahan Tanisha Gorey) is at the centre of a child pornography storyline.

Viewers recently saw Asha strip for her love interest Corey Brent (Maximus Evans) on video camera, unaware she was being recorded.

Kelly Neelan (Millie Gibson) then shared pictures she found among Asha’s school friends. 

In scenes set to come, Asha’s situation worsens when she is presented with a link to a porn site where her footage has been uploaded.

As the video continues to spread, her antics are soon discovered by her dad Dev.

As the storyline continues to unfold, Asha’s former on-screen mum has taken to Twitter to share her thoughts about the storyline.

In view of her 55,000 followers, she jokingly wrote: “I always know Dev can’t cope with the children, when I get an alert on Google about Sunita.

“7 years gone and he wants to bring me up again? #Corrie. It’s not still Sunita’s fault is it?”

Tanisha recently spilled what is to come for her character.

She told Digital Spy: “I don’t want to give too much away, but there’s quite a lot of stuff leading on from this.

“One of the unlikely people who steps forward to help Asha when she’s going through this is Nina.

“A friendship develops between Asha and Nina – and I love that. Nina knows what it’s like to feel different, left out and persecuted.

“That will develop and this story has a long way to go.”

Shobna left the soap for good when her character was killed off in 2013.

Sunita died from her injuries sustained in the Rovers Return fire.

Addressing her exit at the time, she said she is leaving the soap to focus on “other aspects of my career”.

She told The Sun: “I had always told myself I would see my son through school and I have done that.

“Comedy writing has long been a passion of mine and the commitment to a show like Corrie is huge and doesn’t really leave enough time to concentrate on other projects.

“I’d love to be able to combine my writing and acting career in the future.”

She also previously said she wasn’t planning on behind killed off the soap.

“I didn’t plan on dying,” she told the Sunday Post.

“It’s a shame that door’s shut now, because there could have been a time when I’d have gone back.”
