Billy Joel Performs ‘Miami 2017’ With Empire State Building Light Show
Billy Joel surprised fans Monday night by performing his 1976 hit “Miami 2017” from Turnstiles in sync with a light show that illuminated the top of the Empire State Building.
This unannounced appearance from Joel took place at the end of the Tina Fey-hosted “Rise Up New York!” telethon, organized by Robin Hood foundation and iHeartRadio to benefit COVID-19 relief efforts in New York. The foundation has reportedly distributed more than $20 million as of Tuesday.
Joel sang, “I’ve seen the lights go out on Broadway” while being projected all over the screens lining Broadway.
The song, described as “science fiction” by Joel, is set in a future where New York is gone and the last inhabitants have moved elsewhere.
The legend, who is known to end his shows with the phrase “don’t take any (expletive) from anybody,” concluded his show on Monday saying, “Stay safe New York, please wear a mask. That way, you won’t catch anything from anybody.”
Earlier that night, Mariah Carey performed a mashup of “Make It Happen” and “Through The Rain.” Sting, Lin-Manuel Miranda and Idina Menzel, Alicia Keys and Bon Jovi also turned in performances.
