Barbara Windsor remembers her mum’s Co-Op membership despite dementia battle
Brave Barbara Windsor is still sharp enough to remember her mother’s old Co-op membership details as she battles Alzheimer’s.
But, close pal and comedian Paul O’Grady revealed Babs, 81, does sometimes repeat herself.
He said: “Barbara is a sweetheart. We are in touch all the time. People write her off, but she’s doing really well. She went to the panto the other night and to 42nd Street.
“I ran into her and said, ‘What’s your mum’s Co-op number, can you remember?’
“She told me then said, ‘How the hell do we remember that?’ I said, ‘Do you remember me?’And she said, ‘You’re hard to ever forget.’
Asked what Barbara’s main problem was, Paul said: “You repeat yourself. If she does repeat herself, you just answer it and carry on like you haven’t heard it before.”
Barbara’s husband Scott, 55, told The People the couple are planning “a quiet Christmas with family”.
Paul, 63, will be on TV, hosting For The Love Of Dogs.
He promised: “We avoided anything too sad, it is Christmas Day after all.”
In a recent interview on This Morning, Barbara’s former co-star, Adam Woodyatt (AKA Ian Beale) told a heartwarming story of Barbara ‘dancing on stage’ at the theatre on a brilliant night out.
He said: "She’s ok. It isn’t my place to talk about it, but we had such laughs [on a recent night at the theatre.]
"She sung along the whole time and went up on stage a bit. She was tap dancing – we were worried she was going to fall in the pit…
"Have you been to Drury Lane? She’s going forward doing the flap – we got a little bit worried."
Barbara was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease in April 2014, and has been the subjet of many tributes from friends and family about how well she has continued on despite her illness.
For The Love Of Dogs airs at 5.55pm on Christmas Day on ITV.
