‘Baby, It’s Cold Outside’ battle: Sharon Osbourne’s chilly response to Chrissy Teigen
The “Baby, It’s Cold Outside” debate is reaching new levels of icy.
Sharon Osbourne fired back at Chrissy Teigen after the supermodel criticized “The Talk” host for dissing her husband John Legend’s new take on the holiday classic. (Got that?)
Osbourne, 67, slammed Legend’s rewrite of some of the lyrics as “ridiculous” during an episode of “The Talk” Nov. 4. Teigen, 33, clapped backy.
“Sharon’s always gonna have something to say,” Teigen said in an interview with Entertainment Tonight published Sunday. “I remember those days of getting to talk (expletive) for money. It was very fun.”
Osbourne wasn’t going to let that comment slide. On Monday, she returned to “The Talk” with strong words for Teigen.
“It’s amazing that you remember those days, because the show you were on didn’t even last a season,” she said of Teigen, who hosted “FabLife” before its 2016 cancellation. “We are self-made women at this table, who have lived very interesting lives. Every one of us has led a very deep, interesting life.”
Osbourne added: “And I was born into the industry. I just didn’t marry someone who was in the industry. My father was in the industry. My mother was in the industry. Before that, my grandparents were in Variety, so I’m an industry baby.”
After her fierce words, Osbourne noted she doesn’t “want to start anything” with the famous couple.
“I think that John Legend is an amazingly multitalented person,” she continued. “He is incredible, and I think she’s lovely. They have a beautiful little family. They do. They’re just the perfect couple. I don’t have a bone to pick, but I’m also entitled, Chrissy, to my opinion. That’s all I was saying. I just thought the lyric was silly, and that’s it.”
Osbourne capped off her speech with a warning: “Don’t start anything, because I know it will get ugly, so don’t start.”
Osbourne initially voiced her disapproval of Legend’s rewrite last week, saying: “What would John Legend do, if in 40 years, if somebody wanted to, you know times change, re-record one of his songs, and there was some group that found it offensive, and somebody just went, ‘Oh, I can change the lyrics on that.’ ”

She compared Legend and Kelly Clarkson changing the song’s original lyrics to someone looking at a nude painting in a museum and deciding to draw a bikini top over it.
“It’s a piece of art and the thing is to change an innocent lyric to what is it, ‘Your mind and your body’? What the hell are you on? That’s ridiculous,” Osbourne said. “I have to tell you, I love John Legend. I love John Legend’s wife, his family. He’s an amazing artist that I really respect. Why do you do this? That’s not right.”
Legend’s new take on a holiday hit also left Dean Martin’s daughter cold.
Deana Martin, daughter to the famous crooner, slammed the rewrite in an interview with “Good Morning Britain” published Nov. 4.
“He’s stealing the thunder from (original composer) Frank Loesser’s song and from my dad,” said Martin, whose father recorded a famous version of the 1944 song. “He should write his own song if he doesn’t like this one, but don’t change the lyrics. It’s a classic, perfect song.”

The debate over “Baby, It’s Cold Outside” took center stage last holiday season after a radio station in Cleveland announced it would no longer play the song and several other stations around the country followed suit. Critics argue the lyrics have not aged well in the aftermath of #MeToo, with the woman telling the man “no, no, no” and asking, “What’s in this drink?”
In Legend’s 2019 version, he and Clarkson sing different lyrics. One new verse goes as follows, according to Vanity Fair:
Clarkson: “What will my friends think …”
Legend: “I think they should rejoice”
Clarkson: “… if I have one more drink?”
Legend: “It’s your body, and your choice.”
