Ariana Grande Debuts New Single “Imagine” on ‘Tonight Show,’ Blows Away Audience With Her Whistle Note Riffs

Last night, Ariana Grande gave the live debut performance for her brand new single “Imagine” on the Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. Backed by the The Tonight Show‘s house band, The Roots, Ariana seemed to have the studio audience on the edge of their seats from the very beginning of the song.

But then, a couple of minutes into her performance, Ariana blew away the audience. In a low-key power move, Ariana broke out several bars of whistle note riffs about half way through the performance. It was a kind of moment, sort of a shout-out to old school R&B singers like Minnie Ripperton, but also a move few few pop stars not named Mariah Carrey ever try to pull off in live performances.

One publication called the move a “flex” by Ariana at the top of her vocal game. Whatever it was, it certainly got a response from the Tonight Show audience.
