Adam Sharp Named President & CEO Of National Academy Of Television Arts & Sciences

The organization behind the International, Daytime, Sports and News/Documentary Emmy Awards has a new leader. The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences said today that Adam Sharp, whose career includes stints at NBC, C-SPAN and Twitter, has been named as its new President and CEO.

Sharp, who has been working with the 17,000-strong group since February, will lead its operations including sales, promotion, marketing, financial management and planning of its various Emmy programs.

“Adam Sharp’s story is truly a unique story of success,” NATAS Chairman Terry O’Reilly said. “His career in media began when he was awarded one of our very first National Scholarships, in 1996. In the two-plus decades that have passed — through Adam’s years with NBC News and C-SPAN, his tenure as Deputy Chief of Staff for U.S. Sen. Mary Landrieu (D-LA) and his role as Head of News, Government and Elections at Twitter — Adam developed the personal and professional acumen that makes him the ideal candidate to guide our iconic organization. I couldn’t be more pleased by his appointment.”

Said Sharp: “It’s an honor to now be a part of reshaping the definition and recognition of excellence in our space for the years to come. The visual media industry is going through myriad, transformative changes on multiple fronts: shifting viewing habits, new technologies, and upended business models. I’m excited to be at the helm of the Academy as the future of our industry evolves.”

Sharp will lead NATAS in the aftermath of a threatened boycott of its Daytime Emmys by the various network soap operas. In July, daytime dramas The Bold and the Beautiful, Days Of Our Lives, General Hospital and The Young and the Restless vowed not to participate in the trophy unless changes were made to the voting and accounting practices and the way the competition is held. The boycott threat was lifted last month “in the spirit of working with NATAS and the TV Academy on improving the integrity of the Daytime Emmys,” a rep for the four soaps said at the time.
