2019 Grammy Nominations: It’s Rap’s Year So Pop Queens Ariana Grande and Taylor Swift Got Very Little Love
It looks like it is rap’s year, at least as far as the nominations for the 2019 Grammy awards are concerned. Not only were the two artists with the highest number of main-category nominations — Kendrick Lamar (with 8 nominations) and Drake (with 7 nominations) — rap heavy-hitters, but established pop acts were hard to find among the nominees for various top award categories.
Some, in fact, might find the absence of two pop queens from most categories especially hard to understand. Ariana Grande had a monster year with a critically acclaimed album; she also dominated the Hot 100 and pop charts with multiple top 10 singles and managed to put out several iconic music videos, including one that looks like it may become the most widely watched music video in history.
Ariana has never won a Grammy, so some felt that this year might finally be her year. However, she only got two nominations, one for Best Pop Vocal Album and another for Best Pop Solo Performance (“God is a Woman”).
At the other end of the spectrum, Taylor Swift is among the most Grammy award-winning artists ever with 10 so far. Over the last year, she has also had a string of top 20 hits, a No.1 album and the most successful world tour by a female musician in history. She only managed to get one nomination, competing in the same category of Best Pop Vocal Album as Ariana.
On the other hand, Lady Gaga did receive 5 nominations, helped along by the categories related to music with movie tie-ins. And a number of emerging pop stars did pick up some unexpected nods – among these were Camilla Cabello, Shawn Mendes, Dua Lipa, and Bebe Rexha, who all received two nominations. And even Demi Lovato received a surprise nomination for her Christina Aguilera collab, “Fall in Line.”
Below we have the full list of nominees below for those who have not yet seen them.
