The Best Tip Kaia Gerber Ever Learned From Her Mom

I've been obsessed with Marc Jacobs' Daisy campaigns since the day the perfume launched. In high school, my walls were plastered with the ads torn out of magazines. I wore the fragrance religiously, and to this day, the hazy, dreamy commercials transport me to a fantasy world. So naturally, I was thrilled to chat with Kaia Gerber, who has starred in the past few campaigns, only to discover she feels the exact same.

"Every time I get to go back and work with Marc, it just feels like a family," says the 18-year-old model. "I feel so grateful to work with people who are so lovely. They create such a warm, loving environment, which I think you can really see in the campaign. All that laughter, and when we're running through the field, we're actually having an incredible time."

We could all use a bit of that warm feeling and escapism right now, including Gerber, who's currently self isolating at home in L.A. She might be a supermodel—and the progeny of one; her mom is Cindy Crawford!—but when it comes to quarantine beauty temptations, she's just like the rest of us. Currently, she's debating a major haircut, a new tattoo, and a DIY mani. Like I said, relatable. Ahead, she answers all of Glamour's Big Beauty Questions, including her beauty must-haves, biggest inspirations, and how she's keeping calm in quarantine.

How does wearing Daisy make you feel?

It's a super feminine, youthful scent. It just brings me back since I've been wearing it since I was 12 or 13. It's a very comforting smell.

Has your self-care routine changed at all while we've been stuck in isolation?

I've had more time to do self-care, which I've been trying to take advantage of. I've been wearing less makeup and taking more time to make sure my skin is good. I think eating healthy, cooking, and drinking a lot of water has been really good for it. A lot of times I fill up on junk food—when you're working, it's hard to monitor what you're putting in your body. Focusing on my internal health really has helped with my skin.

Are you loving any certain nail colors right now? Have you tried anything fun while we're in quarantine?

I wish I had a good answer for you. I currently have a half-grown out gel nail polish situation going on. So I'm trying to figure out a way to take them off myself without completely destroying my nails. I would love to get my nails done. I feel like even if I just do my own nails, I'll feel like a human again. But I'm currently stripping off old gels.

What have you been listening to in order to keep your spirits up?

I've been listening a lot to podcasts, which I don't normally do, to stay up to date. The Daily has been by new go-to every day. And there's a really great podcast Call Your Girlfriend, where they talk about what's going on with the world. It's super relevant for right now because we're all calling our friends. We can't actually see them.

And then music-wise, I've been listening to a lot of older music, like jazz. A lot of Amy Winehouse, Van Morrison, things like that, just to stay calm.

What's the first beauty treatment you're going to get done when we're out of isolation?

Ooh. I don't know if it counts, but I'll probably get a haircut because if anyone knows me, they know how obsessed I am with cutting my hair. It's one of my favorite things to do. I've been trying to hold off on taking the scissors to my own hair. So hopefully I'll be able to get that done.

Do you think you're going to do something drastic, or just a trim?

I don't know! I have a mullet right now, which I'm not mad at, but I do eventually have to go back into the real world. So I'm thinking we'll see how the mullet progresses throughout quarantine.

What are three products that you can't live without?

Definitely YSL's Touche Éclat for under my eyes, it's saved me so many times. Even now, I'm not really wearing a lot of makeup, but I've been putting that on every day just to wake me up. What else? Daisy, just because it's such a part of my everyday routine outside of quarantine. Doing that every day at home has given me a purpose. I feel like I'm missing something, like an article of clothing if I'm not wearing it. Otherwise I've just been trying to drink a lot of water. When I get busy with work and stuff, I tend to forget to drink water, and now there's no excuse not to.

You have a lot of tattoos. Do you have a favorite? And are you planning on any more once everything calms down?

I have a Picasso painting on my arm. That was one of the first ones I got, so maybe that one. It's hard to pick a favorite! I also have the word "mom" tattooed on me. I think I was so worried I was going to regret every tattoo I got, and they all represent such an important time in my life, even if the tattoo itself doesn't have much importance. It's like they're all memories, so I don't feel like I could ever see myself regretting them.

But, yeah, I've been struggling because one of my favorite pastimes was going and getting tattoos, and nobody's been able to do that. So in the meantime, I gave myself a stick and poke, which I do not recommend.

Wow! You did?

I did. And I think I have a newfound appreciation for tattoo artists. It's not easy.

What did you do?

I didn't get too ambitious. I gave myself a dot, just so I could be like, "Alright, I got a tattoo this month, I'm cool."

What's your favorite way to take a moment for yourself?

For me, I've really found that moment through reading, because even now I feel like there's so much going on all the time. Even when you're watching TV, you're on your phone, you're on Instagram, or you're listening to something, or you're running around. Reading is the only thing where I really find myself focused on that singular act. So sitting down and reading in a quiet place has been very grounding for me.

What books have you've been loving recently?

I'm doing a book club right now, which has been so fun because I've got to re-read a couple of my favorites and also read some new books. I just read Never Let Me Go—it's a great book. There are so many great ones. I'm re-reading Bonjour Tristesse right now with the club. I'm going to talk about it on Friday. I forgot how isolated the main character is. Everyday she's by herself, which is applicable to what's happening right now.

Who are the women inspiring you the most right now?

Well, my mom always inspires me because she finds ways to keep herself busy. She never stops trying to expand her brain. I'm taking courses online now to learn new things that I haven't had time to learn in the past, which is really great.

Amy Adams and Jennifer Garner have been doing this incredible thing where they're having different people read stories to kids. So I read a book for #SaveWithStories. It's super inspiring for me to see everyone who's making an effort right now. You can feel helpless when you can't actually get out there and do something, but we can still make a difference from home. And I think so many people have proven that true.
