Confusion as John Singleton's publicist insists Boyz n the Hood director is STILL ALIVE despite family saying he'd died

THERE is growing confusion surrounding Boyz n the Hood director John Singleton's well-being, after his publicist insisted he is still alive despite his family claiming he had died.

The American director had previously been in a coma after suffering a major stroke more than a week ago.

The family of the American director reportedly told Fox4 that Singleton passed away early on Monday, reported Fox4.

However, TMZ claimed the director may not be dead, citing his publicist.

The confusion may arise from a dispute between two sides of the family of the director's estate, although that could not immediately be confirmed by Sun Online.

The conflicting news comes just one day after Boyz n the Hood actor Jessie Lawrence Ferguson was found dead at his home, aged 77.

The star, who played a crooked police officer in the 1991 blockbuster, is understood to have passed away at home in California on Friday night.

His son told TMZ he discovered his dad in bed with the TV on but said he had been healthy in the days leading up to his death.

It is not yet clear how he died but police said there are no suspicious circumstances.

Singleton had reportedly been in a coma after suffering a major stroke more than a week ago.

He rose to fame with his directorial debut, Boyz n the Hood, in 1991.

The film starred Ice Cube, Cuba Gooding Jr, Regina King and Angela Bassett and was nominated for Best Original Screenplay and Best Director at the Academy Awards in 1992.

Singleton, from Los Angeles, California, was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Director for Boyz in the Hood, becoming the first African American and youngest person to have ever been nominated for the award at age 24.

CONFUSION SURROUNDING HIS WELL-BEING

He also directed the "Remember the Time" music video for Michael Jackson, which featured Eddie Murphy, Iman and Magic Johnson.

In 1997, his film Rosewood, a historical drama about racial violence, was entered into the 47th Berlin International Film Festival.

His other work includes Poetic Justice, 2 Fast 2 Furious, Baby Boy, and Higher Learning.

Columnist B. Scott revealed the news on her blog, writing: "According to our sources, the legendary John Singleton is in the hospital after suffering a stroke.

"His condition is unknown at this time, but we’re sending prayers his way.

"We’ll keep you updated with any significant developments."

TMZ added John admitted himself to hospital after his leg became weak.

John's family have now released a statement to Metro.co.uk which read: "On Wednesday, April 17th our beloved son/father, John Singleton, suffered a stroke while at the hospital.

"John is currently in the ICU and under great medical care.

"We ask that privacy be given to him and our family at this time and appreciate all of the prayers that have been pouring in from his fans, friends and colleagues."

Singleton was a father of five, and had two marriages – first to Tosha Lewis, and the second to Ghanian actress Akousa Busia, from 1996 until 1997.
