Lorraine Warren, Inspiration for The Conjuring and The Amityville Horror Franchises, Dies at 92
Lorraine Warren, whose profession as a paranormal investigator inspired the film The Conjuring, has died. She was 92.
Warren’s grandson, Chris McKinnell, shared the news in a Facebook post on Friday in which he shared several photos of her alongside her husband Ed, who worked alongside her until his death in August 2006 at the age of 79.
“Last night my grandmother, Lorraine Warren, quietly and peacefully left us to join her beloved Ed,” McKinnell wrote. “She was happy and laughing until the very end. She was my angel and my hero, and she will be deeply missed.”
He added, “Please join us in celebrating her life and honoring her beautiful soul. Remember to treasure those you love while you can. Thank you and God bless you all.”
Warren was portrayed by Oscar-nominee Vera Farmiga in the 2013 supernatural horror film The Conjuring which followed the Warrens as they worked to help a family terrorized by a dark presence in their home in the 1970s. Patrick Wilson portrayed her husband, Ed.
Farmiga shared her condolences on Twitter, writing, “My dear friend Lorraine Warren has passed. From a deep feeling of sorrow, a deep feeling of gratitude emerges. I was so blessed to have known her and am honored to portray her. She lived her life in grace and cheerfulness. She wore a helmet of salvation, she dawned her sword…”
She continued, “…compassion, and took a shield of faith. Righteousness was her breastplate, and she has touched my life so. Love you Lorraine. You’re waltzing with Ed now.”
The Warrens were also the inspiration for 2014’s Annabelle and its two sequels, as well as The Nun series. The Curse of La Llorona, which is currently in theaters, and The Crooked Man, which is in development, are set within the same universe as The Conjuring.
The Warrens were among the first investigators to examine the house at the center of the Amityville haunting. The stories reportedly popularized by the Warrens became the inspiration for 17 films in the Amityville Horror series.
The Curse of La Llorona, which is the latest film in The Conjuring series, is in theaters now.
