Watch shocking moment riot police pepper spray footballers as mass brawl erupts on pitch between fierce local rivals in Brazil

THIS is the shocking moment riot police blasted players with pepper spray after a brawl broke out at a match in Brazil.

Footballers were left holding their eyes in agony after chaos erupted during Atletico Goianiense's clash with bitter rivals Vila Nova.

Outrageous footage shows players from both teams scrapping on the side of the pitch at the Estadio Antonio Accioly.

An Atletico substitute in a blue bib can be seen chasing a Vila Nova star before he pushes him to the ground.

Players and staff from both teams got involved before a mass brawl commenced in front of shocked fans.

It came to an abrupt end when cops dressed in full riot gear charged on to the pitch armed with pepper spray.

Police sprayed the aerosol into the air and towards all of the players that were involved in the scrap.

A number of stars from both teams were left holding their eyes in pain as they made their way off the pitch.

Local media reports that fans in the stadium were also affected by the spray – which is an irritant to the eyes and respiratory passages.

Atletico star Washington Santana da Silva and Vila Nova ace Philipe Maia were both sent off in the 90th minute of the match.

But it has not been confirmed whether the teams will face punishment for the incident.

Atletico won the semi-final of Brazil's Campeonato Goiana 1-0 after a 76th minute goal from Jorginho.

A match summary from the Goiana Football Federation stated that the fight started when Vila Nova striker Keke left the bench and went on to the pitch.
