Huge pile-up at Giro d'Italia leaves bikes and bodies strewn across the road in chaotic scenes

DOZENS of cyclists ended up bloodied and bruised after a pile-up at the Tour of Italy.

Stage six of the Giro d'Italia saw riders pass through a walled pass and a close-riding peloton was brought down on a wet road.

One Lotto-Jumbo-Visma rider Sepp Kuss saw his back wheel snapped off its back axle as riders helped each other off the tarmac.

Former Team Sky rider and current Movistar ace Mikel Landa had to check himself after the bump, appearing to worry he had a bloodied nose.

The race leader Primoz Roglic suffered during the bump as he showed torn bib shorts with the side of his right buttock on show in the 147-mile ride from Cassino to San Giovanni Rotondo.

THE YATE ESCAPE

The medical car also appears to have dressed the wound after he hit the deck, which is always a major challenge for the race leader when there are still 15 stages to go.

Yesterday's sprint stage winner Pascal Ackermann also had to pick his bike up off the deck after a bash.

Britain's Simon Yates is among the favourites to win the Tour of Italy, which is only six stages into its brutal 21 legs.

Mitchelton-Scott rider Yates — who won the Vuelta a Espana last year — was in second place after stage five, 35sec behind leader Roglic.

The previous day's riding had to be curtailed because of heavy rain at the finish, with most of the bike handlers managing to stay on two wheels going around corners en-masse despite a deluge in Terracina.

Stage four saw a big crash that led to 2017 winner Tom Dumoulin pulling out the following day.
