Australian batsman Alex Carey suffers horror cut after wicked Jofra Archer delivery in Cricket World Cup semi-final – The Sun

AUSTRALIAN batsman Alex Carey suffered a gash to his chin after a wicked Jofra Archer bouncer.

Facing just the fifth ball of his innings, with Australia 19-3 after 7.5 overs, Archer raced in to deliver another rapid bowl.

The ball bounced up off the pitch and flew through the gap and clattered into the grille of his helmet.

Due to the pace of the delivery from Archer, the helmet came flying off.

Carey, in at No5 for the struggling Aussies, had the presence of mind to catch his helmet.

If it had landed on the stumps and knocked off the bails, he would have been given out in the most unfortunate of circumstances.

But the heavy blow clearly caused considerable damage for Carey, cutting him open.

The physio came on to provide treatment, patching the wicket-keeper up so he could continue. But after five more overs, the trainer was back to add further strapping as the blow began to swell.

That caused a slight delay in the action, allowing players and spectators to catch their breath after a relentless start.

Archer dismissed Australia captain Aaron Finch lbw for a golden duck with his first delivery.

In the third over, Chris Woakes tempted David Warner into an edge, with Jonny Bairstow holding on to a simple catch at slip.

And then after already surviving a review, Peter Handscomb went for four when he could only edge Woakes' fine delivery on to his stumps.

It reduced Australia to 14-3 off just 6.1 overs with Steve Smith and Carey trying to build a recovery in the Cricket World Cup semi-final at Edgbaston.
