Celebrities Pay Tribute to Karl Lagerfeld After Designer's Death at 85

Celebrities and fashion industry stars are paying tribute to a style icon.

Karl Lagerfeld died this week in Paris at the age of 85. The news comes just one month after Lagerfeld missed Chanel’s spring 2019 haute couture show in Paris on January 22, leading to reports that he was in poor health.

Notes from Lagerfeld’s admirers have poured in since news of the iconic designer’s death. Many remembered him for his quick wit and genius work. The visionary designer led three brands: Fendi, Chanel and his own line, Karl Lagerfeld.

Keira Knightley, who stars as the face of Chanel and was photographed many times by Lagerfeld for the brand’s campaigns, expressed her love of the designer.

Fendi, one of the brands he oversaw as creative director, posted a note of gratitude, early Tuesday: “Thank you for the most beautiful journey. With all our love Your Fendi family.”

Designer Valentino Garavani wrote, “I am so sad and the words cannot express my sorrow. I love you my friend.”

Meanwhile, industry insiders like Derek Blasberg, head of YouTube fashion, and Eva Chen, Instagram’s head of fashion, posted their own fond memories of the designer. “He was brilliant and biting and busy and literally the best there ever was,” Blasberg wrote.

Designer Victoria Beckham and her husband, soccer star David Beckham, both paid their respects on Instagram. “So incredibly sad to hear this. Karl was a genius and always so kind and generous to me both personally and professionally,” Victoria wrote.

Gigi Hadid and Bella Hadid both honored the designer on their Instagram stories. “I’m so heartbroken I almost don’t have words,” Gigi wrote. “There will never be another Karl Lagerfeld. Every second with you was an honor, joy, and inspiration. I wish I could give you one last hug.”

Bella reposted her sister’s words, adding another story that read, “Nothing seems right at the moment…”

Designer and model Alexa Chung also shared her memories of Lagerfeld. “I remember being so scared to interview you and yet you were in fact incredibly witty and generous,” she wrote on Instagram. “Thank you for inviting me to some of the most glamorous experiences of my life, it was an honour to know you.”

In addition to fashion design, Lagerfeld was a photographer and video director, having created all the advertising campaigns for the brands he designed for. He photographed his muses and has worked with every top model and actress in the industry including Claudia Schiffer, Kristen Stewart and countless other A-list actresses.
