Writer wants boycott of Girl Scout cookies because of Ocasio-Cortez support

A former nationally known sportscaster has called for a boycott of Girl Scout cookies because Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez was once a Scout.

Jane Chastain, 76, suggested in a column about the International Women’s Day in the conservative WorldNetDaily that the March 8 celebration — with its socialist origins — had corrupted the Girl Scouts.

“It is no small coincidence that the Girl Scouts are out in force this month selling cookies on street corners, in front of grocery stores and other places of business,” she wrote in WND. “For many years, I would buy at least one box from every girl I met, even if I had a dozen or more boxes at home.”

Chastain, who became the first woman to call an NFL game in 1974, said she once sold the cookies herself.

“Not anymore,” she wrote, explaining that the organization – whose motto is “building girls of courage, confidence and character” — no longer promoted God and country.

But she focused most of her ire on the Girl Scouts’ support for Ocasio-Cortez, the 29-year-old freshman socialist Democrat from New York.

“In fact,” she wrote, “the Girl Scouts are celebrating the victory won by their alums in the 2018 midterms on its website, beginning with their star, Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez, who attributes much of her success to what she learned as part of this organization.”

Chastain noted that only one of the new members of Congress was elected as a Republican.

“Now Girl Scout alums make up 72 percent of female senators and 60 percent of the women in the 116th Congress,” she said.

“Although the website tries to strike a bipartisan tone, it is no accident that, among this year’s freshmen, Carol Miller is the only Republican, and she is much older, 68, than the rest. Her training in scouting was well before the feminist takeover that occurred in 1970.”

She ended her piece with a rhetorical question.

“Will the country be better off with more representatives like the young socialist Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez?”

AOC responded to Chastain in a pair of tweets.

“Boycotting cookies that teach little girls leadership skills to own the libs, nice job,” with a thumbs-up emoji.

“I’ll take 10,” she added with a winking emoji.

In a follow-up tweet, the socialist darling said she is “extraordinarily proud of the role my constituents have played in helping to establish + support Troop 6000, the first-ever @girlscouts troop for girls experiencing homelessness.”
