Thug tries to run over rival gang member amid Sunderland street brawl

Shocking moment thug tries to run over a rival gang member as mass brawl erupts on streets of Sunderland

  • Violence happened in Hylton Road, Sunderland, on June 25 at around 7pm
  • Was part of 30-person brawl which earlier took place in neighbouring street
  • Video emerged on same day five former Metropolitan Police chiefs blamed Britain crime wave on lack of resources

This is the moment a thug narrowly avoids being run over during a street battle with rival gang members wielding steel bars.

The outbreak of violence happened in Hylton Road, Sunderland, on June 25 at around 7pm and was caught on film from the window of an overlooking flat.

Footage shows the thug jumping out of the way of a silver 4×4 car as it appears to deliberately speed towards him before crashing into the wall behind.

The near miss was part of a mass brawl involving 30 people which took place in a neighbouring street earlier the same evening.

It emerged on the same day that five former chiefs of the Metropolitan Police gave a stark warning that cuts in officer numbers had created the impression of a lawless Britain amid continuing outbreaks of violence.

The video starts by showing a red car parked in a side street on Hylton road, near the A1231 roundabout.

Behind it is a silver 4×4 which violently accelerates and the sound of screeching tyres can be heard as it picks up pace and drives towards the thug in a hooded top and bright yellow gloves.

He jumps out of the way just in time and there is a crashing sound as the car hits the wall behind.

The red car then stops in the road and a ginger-haired man, who is wielding an iron bar and wearing a grey hooded top, shouts, ‘let me in’, as he tries to open the door.

Another silver 4×4 similar to the one which hit the wall is behind the red car and is blocking the path of ordinary traffic.

A tall man in a gilet, who appears to have gotten out of the car, then heads menacingly towards someone standing in a building’s doorway and disappears inside.

He is quickly joined by two more men, both of whom are wielding metal poles.

The man who had tried to get in the car is then seen running up the street to join the men in the building.

The red car’s door then shuts as it is seen speeding away without the man.

One of the men who had gone inside the building then comes outside and is still holding a long pole as he gets back in the car.

He is joined once more by the ginger-haired man, who also gets in the 4×4 before it drives down a side street and out of view.

A shop owner in Hylton Road, who wishes to remain anonymous, said: ‘I am now getting security cameras fitted in, I’ve had the door locked ever since.

‘From what I’ve heard, two fellas had a disagreement and decided to settle it outside B&Q.

‘However, one brought a large number of his friends, and so the other guy did the same.

‘There was about 30 of them, some of them had machetes, crowbars, and steel bars. It’s scary.’

A spokeswoman for Northumbria Police said: ‘The detective leading an investigation into a large-scale disturbance in Sunderland has appealed for motorists to come forward with dashcam footage.

‘Shortly before 7pm on Tuesday (June 25), police were called to the area of Trimdon Street after receiving a report of an affray involving up to 30 people.

‘A large group were fighting each other in the street and a number of vehicles were damaged in the incident.

‘The altercation then continued on Hylton Road shortly after.’

‘Detective Inspector Sean Mcguigan, of Northumbria Police, said: ‘The violence shown could have easily led to serious injury or even a fatality, and as a result, we are committed to ensuring those responsible are brought to justice.’

The brazen street violence is just the latest example of criminality in Britain which led to five former chiefs of the Metropolitan Police claiming today that there is a ‘feeling of lawlessness’ in the country.

Writing in The Times, the officers, who led the Metropolitan Police from 1993 to 2017, argued that police resources had been ‘drained to dangerously low levels’.

This left victims with ‘perilously low expectations’ of the police.

They wrote: ‘The reduction of police and support staff by more than 30,000, the virtual destruction of neighbourhood policing and the inadvisable undermining of lawful police powers such as stop and search, have taken their toll.’ They signed off by calling for an immediate royal commission on the state of policing.

The letter is signed by Lord Condon, Lord Stevens, Lord Blair, Sir Paul Stephenson and Lord Hogan-Howe.

Lord Hogan-Howe is the immediate predecessor to current Met commissioner Cressida Dick, and he was in charge from 2011 until 2017.

Last week, six people were killed around Britain in a weekend of violence.

Four people died in London, including a pregnant 26-year-old woman, a 27-year-old man was attacked and killed in Maldon, Essex, and a murder investigation was launched after the death of a 47-year-old in Llanelli, south Wales.

The four killings in London took the total number of homicides in the capital this year to 67.
