Buckingham Palace is updating its decades-old water and heating systems as part of its £370 million revamp to become more cost effective and environmentally friendly.

The 10-year re-servicing programme is a vast overhaul of the Palace’s water and heating systems, which includes 30-year-old boilers and heating pipes up to 60 years old.

In a newly released clip published by the Royal Family, the video puts the Palace’s ageing basement on full display.

Project manager Bob Igoe opens by highlighting the urgency of replacing the Palace’s worn boilers with a new energy centre that will save the Queen’s residence 300 tonnes per year in carbon emissions savings.

The ‘Powering the Palace’ clip shows construction workers carving out a new hatch opening for hoisting the decrepit boilers directly out of the basement.

Igoe adds that the new energy centre will also offer the Palace more flexibility for their heating solutions, which will lead to more savings.

Shots of the Palace’s decaying radiators and old boilers are matched only by the dilapidated heating pipes that channel through the building’s floors. 

These 60-year-old pipeworks are double the age of Buckingham’s boilers and are being installed across the many different Palace rooms used for workshops and catering facilities.

While the Palace makeover has attracted some controversy for its eyewatering costs, officials have warned that re-servicing is crucial in order to ‘future-proof’ the building.

Thousands of Royal Collection items are being transferred from The East Wing of the Palace to allow for essential renovations that are due to commence next spring. 

Many items will now go on loan and will be on display in Brighton’s Royal Pavilion, according to the Palace.

However, the Queen will remain in place and it not expected to move out.
