Six in ten workers say they have an ‘arch-enemy’ at work – with 20 per cent admitting they have called in sick because they cannot face their nemesis.

And almost a quarter of people were driven to drink or cigarettes to deal with the stress their rival caused.

Martin Talbot, of recruitment firm Totaljobs, which quizzed 7,000 workers for the survey, said: ‘Difficult workplace relationships lead to people taking up bad habits, losing sleep or calling in sick, so we should take the concept of work enemies seriously.’
